Job Summary
The Security Systems Administrator II is responsible for supporting and maintaining Control Center infrastructure stability, security, and performance, with a focus on compliance with the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) Reliability Standards. This role involves the administration of security systems, implementation of cybersecurity controls, and participation in compliance audits and assessments. The position requires a strong understanding of IT systems, cybersecurity principles, and regulatory frameworks.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
•Security Systems Administration (35%)
•Administer and maintain security systems including firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS), malware prevention, anti-virus, SIEM, and secure backup systems.
•Monitor system logs and security alerts to identify and respond to potential threats.
•Implement and maintain technical controls in accordance with cybersecurity policies and NERC CIP Reliability Standards.
•Compliance and Documentation (20%)
•Support CORE’s compliance with NERC CIP Reliability Standards, including documentation, evidence collection, and audit preparation.
•Monitor and interpret changes to NERC CIP standards and assist in implementing necessary updates.
•Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of system configurations, procedures, and compliance activities.
•System Maintenance and Monitoring (20%)
•Perform routine maintenance on systems and infrastructure.
•Monitor performance and availability of critical systems and ensure timely patching and updates.
•Collaboration and Support (10%)
•Work closely with IT, OT, Operations, and Engineering teams to ensure secure and compliant system operations.
•Provide technical support and guidance to internal stakeholders regarding security best practices.
•Incident Response and Risk Management (5%)
•Participate in incident response activities, including investigation, containment, and remediation.
•Conduct security risk assessments and vulnerability scans; assist in remediation planning and execution.
•Training and Development (5%)
•Stay informed about emerging cybersecurity threats, technologies, and regulatory changes.
•Participate in training and professional development opportunities.
•Support special projects and initiatives related to control center and enterprise security.
•Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications of Position
•Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
•Minimum 1-3 years of relevant work experience in system administration, network administration, or a closely related field.
•Strong understanding of server and network technologies, possess proficiency in operating systems such as Windows Server and Linux, and have experience with virtualization technologies.
•Relevant certifications (e.g., CompTIA Security+, Network+, Server+) are desirable.
•Proven track record of successful server and network management, security implementation, and collaboration within an IT environment.
•Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and a commitment to ongoing professional development are essential for success in this role.
Preferred Qualifications of Position
•Relevant certifications (e.g., CompTIA Security+, Network+, Server+) are desirable.
•3-5 years of practical experience in system administration or a closely related field.
•A master’s degree in information technology or a related field is preferred.
•Advanced certifications (e.g., CompTIA CySA+, GICSP, VCP) or equivalent, showcasing expertise in server and network technologies are a plus.
•Proven experience in implementing and managing advanced security measures, as well as experience with regulatory or standards framework (e.g., NERC CIP, HIPPA, PCI) is highly desirable.
•Demonstrated ability to contribute effectively to IT projects, exhibit strong leadership skills, and showcase a proactive approach to staying abreast of emerging technologies and industry best practices.
•Exceptional problem-solving abilities, effective communication skills, and a commitment to continuous improvement will further distinguish the ideal candidate for this role.
Knowledge and Skills
•In-depth knowledge of server and network technologies, including proficiency in managing servers running Windows Server and Linux operating systems.
•Strong understanding of virtualization technologies, such as VMware or Hyper-V, is essential along with experience in security protocols and troubleshooting connectivity issues.
•Adept at implementing and managing security measures, including system firewalls and intrusion detection systems, and have a comprehensive understanding of backup and disaster recovery procedures.
•Familiarity with NERC CIP Reliability Standards and advanced certifications (e.g., MCSE, VCAP, CCNA) would be valuable assets.
•Commitment to continuous learning and stay updated on emerging technologies and industry trends.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
The Security System Administrator II position typically involves working in an office environment, often within the IT department or Control Center of an organization. Travel requirements are generally low, as most tasks are performed onsite. The workspace may include sitting at a desk for extended periods, utilizing computer systems and peripherals. Physical requirements are generally light, with occasional lifting and carrying of IT equipment such as servers or computer components, typically not exceeding 50 lbs. The role may involve some standing or walking within the office or data center setting. The incumbent should be comfortable with occasional moderate physical exertion and able to perform tasks requiring manual dexterity and visual acuity for extended periods. Specific physical requirements may vary based on the organization's specific IT infrastructure and setup.
