Reporting to the Senior Safety Coordinator, the Safety Coordinator is responsible for providing support, advice and coaching to the operation on implementation of the Rio Tinto Safety Standards, incident management and associated legal and other requirements. Both within IOC and Rio Tinto the role plays an important part in ensuring a safe workplace is fostered and that the business meets both Rio Tinto and legislative needs. The role is based in Labrador City, NL. The work schedule consists of four 10-hour days per week, either Monday to Thursday or Tuesday to Friday

You will support the business by ensuring that the operation and its’ employees are working safely and in compliance with legal and other requirements through the provision of quality services and advice to the Labrador City operation. The role is required to support the operational areas, assist with incident management, and implement safety initiatives to continuously improve performance.

Reporting to the Senior Coordinator and working in an exciting and unique environment within the Iron Ore Company of Canada, you will be:

- Drive for continuous improvement of Safety performance and promoting safety awareness and safe work practices.

- Provide advice and support operational areas to ensure that operating and maintenance activities undertaken are designed, planned, and carried out in accordance with Rio Tinto’s safety systems and comply with Provincial and Federal regulations.

- Assist with safety investigations and coach leaders and coordinators on how to prepare reports and recommendations and implement corrective and preventative actions.

- Monitor and report on safety performance indicators to drive change in the workplace.

- Understand, promote, and adhere to the HSEQ Management System, Rio Tinto HSE performance standards and IOC’s supporting procedures.

- Understand and ensure compliance with relevant statutory and legislative provisions and the Rio Tinto Safety Standards

- Demonstrate an excellent understanding of the IOC risk assessment process, including hazard identification and implementation of controls.

- Assist with the development of the Safety Plan.

- Implement projects in accordance with the Safety Plan.

- Assist in the development and update of safety policies, procedures, and related documentation.

- Participate in HSE audits and Government tours as required.

- Participate in safety planning for the operations and projects.

- Communicate regularly with the H&S team and key stakeholders on current safety performance, improvement initiatives and performance against plan.

Note: FIFO Options are not available. The role requires a relocation in Labrador City. Domestic relocation assistance can be provided.


What you’ll bring

- A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team

- Tertiary qualification in a related field. (desired)

- 3-5 years related experience in an industrial environment.

- Canadian Registered Safety Professional designation CRSP (desired)

- Training in incident investigation and analysis (e.g., Taproot, Root Cause Analysis etc.) (desired)

- Confidence and positivity, inspiring and motivating the team to achieve their best

- Strong ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.

The Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) is a leading Canadian producer of iron ore concentrate and iron ore pellets that serves customers worldwide. The company operates a mine, a concentrator and a pelletizing plant in Labrador City, Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as port facilities in Sept-Îles, Quebec. It also operates a 418 kilometer railroad that links the mine to the port.
