Basin Safety is hiring a hands-on Safety Consultant to support rail operations across the Upper Midwest. You’ll lead field safety audits, coach crews, deliver site-specific training, and drive incident prevention and regulatory compliance (OSHA, FRA, AAR, DOT; plus NFPA/API where applicable). Expect a mix of field time at yards/sites and structured reporting to management with clear KPIs and action closure.
- Lead on-site safety inspections and hazard assessments for rail operations, construction/maintenance, and equipment. Provide daily electronic reports with observations, coaching, and corrective actions.
- Verify crews understand procedures and required training; deliver site-specific orientations and briefings as needed.
- Respond to incidents/spills; conduct incident investigations and Root Cause Analysis; manage close-outs and prevention actions.
- Oversee safety-sensitive work (confined space, hot work, critical lifts, gas detection) and verify permitting/compliance in the field.
- Perform equipment and facility inspections; track and drive completion of corrective actions.
- Report weekly to client leadership on goals, metrics, and obstacles; support executive-level safety strategy and gap mitigation plans.
- Contribute to emergency response planning and continuous improvement of the HSE program.Orientation topics may include: handbook overview; job hazard analysis/JSA; hazard recognition; SSE coaching; accident/incident reporting; H2S & other chemical awareness; HAZWOPER (FR level); confined space awareness; LOTO awareness; arc-flash basics; and site-specific plan delivery.
- 5+ years of HSE experience in rail, industrial services, oil & gas, utilities, or heavy construction (rail experience strongly preferred).
- Working knowledge of OSHA, FRA, AAR, DOT, and familiarity with NFPA/API standards as applicable to rail/facility operations.
- Proven field presence: conducting audits, coaching crews, and managing safety-sensitive work.
- Incident investigation and RCA skills; clear, concise technical writing and report delivery.
- Strong interpersonal skills with supervisors, craft personnel, and executives.
- Proficiency with digital inspection/reporting tools and metrics dashboards.
- Valid driver’s license: ability to work outdoors in all conditions and don required PPE.
- CHST, OHST/CIH/CSP, COSS, or equivalent credential(s).
- HAZWOPER, Confined Space, and Rigging/Lifting awareness training experience.
- Experience building site-specific safety plans and emergency response plans.
- Standard rotation: four 10-hour days/week (some overtime as needed).
- Regional day travel with periodic overnights.
