The R&D Director will lead On.Energy’s global research and development program with a focus on power electronics, energy storage integration, and critical power infrastructure. Based in Houston, TX, this role requires deep expertise in power electronics, power systems, UPS architectures, and advanced grid-interactive controls. The Director will oversee lab validation, product prototyping, and collaboration with universities, suppliers, and customers to push the technical frontier of Always.On™ and related technologies.This position will report directly to the Chief Technology Officer and work closely with Engineering, Software, and Commercial teams to accelerate product evolution from concept to deployment.
Requirements
- Lead R&D Strategy: Define and execute the technical roadmap for Always.On™ and emerging power electronics products.
- Technology Development: Oversee design, modeling, and validation of inverter and BESS architectures, including grid-forming/grid-following control schemes.
- Lab & Field Validation: Expand and supervise On.Energy’s hardware-in-the-loop (HIL), software-in-the-loop (SIL), and power lab testing for high-power converters, transformers, and EMS integration.
- Cross-Functional Leadership: Collaborate with Product, EMS, and O&M teams to translate R&D findings into commercialized solutions that meet data center, utility, and industrial requirements.
- External Partnerships: Engage with universities, suppliers, and standards bodies (IEEE, UL, ERCOT) to position On.Energy at the forefront of BESS/Mission Critical R&D.
- Team Building: Mentor engineers and scientists across power electronics, controls, and energy storage disciplines, fostering innovation and technical excellence.
- IP & Publications: Support patent filings, technical whitepapers, and industry presentations to strengthen On.Energy’s thought leadership and IP portfolio.Required Qualifications
- Education: Master’s or PhD in Electrical Engineering (Power Electronics focus preferred).
- Experience: 10+ years in R&D leadership roles within power electronics, UPS, or BESS sectors.- Demonstrated expertise in:Power electronics, power conversion, inverters, Medium-voltage distribution systems and UPS Battery Energy Storage Systems (Li-ion, LFP, or equivalent chemistries) Grid-forming and grid-following control strategies Modeling/simulation tools (PSCAD, MATLAB/Simulink, EMT models, HIL)
- Track record of lab validation, prototyping, and technology transfer into commercial deployment.
- Strong knowledge of UL, IEEE, NFPA, and ERCOT interconnection standards.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and cross-disciplinary collaboration skills.Preferred Attributes
- Prior experience designing or validating data center UPS or utility-scale energy storage systems.
- Familiarity with AI/data center load profiles, high-frequency transient management, and harmonic mitigation.
- Experience building and managing technical teams and external R&D collaborations.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus.
- Ability to travel up to 25% domestically and internationally.
