The Project Engineer in our Commercial Division will play a critical role in the design, planning, and execution of solar energy and energy storage projects for commercial clients. This position requires a blend of technical expertise, project management skills, and client collaboration to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest standards of quality and safety.
Responsibilities and Duties
· Project Design & Engineering:
•Implement and serve as the primary point of contact with external resources such as structural, civil and electrical engineer consultants, geotechnical and topographic surveyors, vendors and other specialized professionals as needed.
•Develop and review technical designs, specifications, and drawings for solar PV systems and energy storage solutions, ensuring compliance with industry standards, codes, and client requirements.
•Perform post-sale site inspections to gather additional site information as required. Coordinate with the selected engineer of record (EOR) and if necessary, the selected subcontractor providing the AC and DC construction scope to perform a kick-off site inspection with all stakeholders to ensure all parties are on the same page.
•Confirm and/or determine if the interconnection of projects will take place on the low voltage or medium voltage section of facility infrastructure.
•Review and maintain drawing packages, energy production models, bills of materials, scopes of work and other technical project documentation.
•Utilize software systems to record progress of various tasks.
•Organizing photos and documentation in company CRM and file folders.
•Ensure that the post-sale design changes fall within the contract terms or inform the development team of impending change orders.
•Create and provide scope of work and contract documents for third party engineering firms.
•Any other project engineering required items to ensure the success of a construction project.
· Project Management:
•Manage the technical needs in all stages of project development and design, including conceptual and advanced system design, observing regulatory codes as well as customer requirements, specify balance of systems, perform site visits, coordinate needs for the permitting and technical support during the construction phase.
•Coordinate internal resources for subject matter expertise and project risk reduction.
•Prepare bid packages for subcontractors including scope of work, schedule, project description, and conceptual and/or completed designs.
•Assist in field with site visits, testing, commissioning and start-up of constructed power plants as needed.
· Client & Stakeholder Collaboration:
•Act as a primary technical point of contact for clients, contractors, and internal teams, providing updates, addressing concerns, and ensuring alignment on project goals.
•Collaborate with team members when necessary to ensure effective communication and results.
· Permitting & Compliance:
•Support the Admin team with the submission of permit and interconnection applications, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, including environmental and safety standards.
•Assist with technical comments and drawing revisions as required by the AHJ throughout the application process.
· Project Development Engineering (Pre-sale):
•Conduct site assessments, perform energy yield analyses, and prepare feasibility reports to support project proposals and design decisions as needed in collaboration with the development team.
•Prepare conceptual design for solar projects including selection of major components, equipment layouts, single-line diagrams, etc. as needed in collaboration with the development team.
•In collaboration with the development team, contribute to the completion of proposals to design and deliver PV and BESS projects.
•Lead the technical tasks in preparation of EPC proposals and the review of potential project acquisition opportunities;
· Quality & Process Improvement:
•Maintains continuous improvements in project designs, plans, processes and product development.
•Perform other duties and special projects, as assigned.
•Consistently interact with field construction crews to determine if there are design criteria that could be implemented to improve the constructability of designs, allowing for an effective feedback loop.
Qualifications
· Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Renewable Energy, or a related field.
· Experience:
•4+ years of experience in engineering or project management, preferably in solar energy, renewable energy, or a related industry.
•Experience with commercial-scale solar PV systems or energy storage projects in Hawaii is required.
· Technical Skills:
•Proficiency in design software (e.g., AutoCAD, PVsyst, Helioscope, or similar).
•Knowledge of electrical systems, low voltage and medium voltage grid interconnection, and energy storage technologies.
•Familiarity with industry standards (e.g., NEC, IEEE, UL).
•Understand the NEC electrical code specifically relating to Solar PV Equipment in sections 690 and 705 and Energy Storage equipment within the NFPA 855.
•Understand how to interpret one-line and three-line electrical diagrams and create single-line and three-line diagrams.
•Understand how PV system interconnections work for different types of facilities.
•Strong working knowledge of building construction, framing and roofing.
•Experience with CRM software tools.
•Experience in creating material takeoffs.
· Soft Skills:
•Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
•Strong in Microsoft Office Suite.
•Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for client and team interactions.
•Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
•Demonstrate good judgment and analytical skills.
•Critical thinking and ability to solve problems quickly.
•High attention to detail.
· Certifications: Professional Engineer (PE) license or EIT certification is preferred but not required. NABCEP certification is a plus.
· Other Requirements: Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to project sites as needed.
