About This Job

The Power Plant Maintenance Person KPS position performs all types of work necessary in the installation, repair and maintenance of diesel engines, gas turbines, steam boilers, centrifuges, pumps, piping and structural equipment; performs the duties of a Journeyman Mechanic. Uses oil fired and waste heat steam generators, steam turbine generators, gas turbine generators, diesel generators, pumps, compressors, fans, and other auxiliary equipment; a complete variety of hand tools and power tools used in the trade; precision measuring and testing equipment, cutting and welding equipment, chemicals, oils, steam, water, etc.

This position requires the incumbent to be physically on-site. Applicants must be authorized to work for ANY employer in the United States. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time.

Rate of pay is determined by the current collective bargaining agreement.

Position Responsibilities:

•

Knows and applies company policies, safety programs, and other applicable rules and procedures.

•

Works from instruction books, blueprints, sketches, oral and written instructions.

•

Sets up and operates machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, grinders and drill presses. Knows properties and uses of metals. May be required to machine metals and parts to original tolerances.

•

Arc and gas cuts steel and nonferrous alloys. Arc and gas welds, brazes, and silver solders steel and nonferrous alloys. Heats machines parts for shrink fits.

•

Uses precision measure instruments accurately such as inside micrometers, outside micrometers, calipers, depth gauges, dial indicators, etc.

•

Must observe standard and special safety and environmental regulations pertaining to his/her job at all times; required to use protective equipment as prescribed and furnished in order to protect self, fellow workers, others, and their property.

•

Performs operational or overhaul maintenance on power plant equipment such as boilers, turbines, internal combustion engines, fuel handling systems, safety devices, fans, heaters, pumps, compressors, tanks, etc.

•

Performs general maintenance and repairs on fences, property, buildings, structures and other company equipment.

•

Layout, install or repair all types of piping and valves including hangers, supports, etc.

•

Concrete work including the construction of forms, installation of steel, cementing and finishing.

•

Rigging, using rope, rope blocks, cable, slings, and various fittings; splices and cares for ropes and blocks.

•

Operates company motor vehicles including forklifts, man lifts, and cranes. Is responsible for operating motor vehicles according to traffic code, safety rules and operating procedures. Maintains company vehicles and trucks under his/her responsibility.

•

Assists in electrical installation or repair work.

•

Assist in instrumentation work.

•

Maintains plant cleanliness.

•

Instructs and directs people as required on any or all of the above operations.

•

Performs similar and incidental duties as required.

Qualifications and Experience:

•

Must be a graduate of the Power Plant Maintenance Person Apprentice Program or demonstrate equivalent training and experience maintaining and troubleshooting utility size diesel engines, gas turbines, steam boilers, and auxiliary equipment through written examinations and/or job performance.

•

The company may decide to substitute equivalent work experience for the Apprentice Program requirement listed above.

•

Must pass differential aptitude tests (standardized tests of abstract reasoning, mechanical reasoning, verbal reasoning, and numerical ability) and other job related tests as deemed necessary by the company.

•

Must be available for call-outs and overtime.

•

Must have or be able to obtain a valid State of Hawaii Driver's License.

•

Must have a minimum of four (4) years experience in power plant maintenance activities. Work experience or equivalent educational background may be substituted when approved.

•

Must have the ability to clearly and effectively present information and respond to questions from customers and the general public.

•

Must possess good interpersonal skills and organizational skills to handle multiple priorities.

•

Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

•

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

•

Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instruction in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

•

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; and see, talk or hear.

•

The employee is required to walk, bend and reach with body, legs, feet, hands and arms.

•

The employee must occasionally lift, carry, and/or move up to 75 pounds.

•

The noise and dusty level in the work environment is as would be encountered in normal commercial/industrial sites. Occasionally works in noisy, hot areas for hours at a time.
