Role Overview
The West Power Analyst provides analytical and market research to support trading strategies across
WECC, CAISO, and SPP. This role focuses on interpreting market fundamentals, identifying trading opportunities, and supporting congestion research and virtual trading strategies.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyze and interpret power and fuel market fundamentals, including thermal and renewable generation, load, transmission, natural gas supply, transportation, and regulatory developments.
- Mine and model CAISO and SPP data to support congestion analysis, virtual trading strategies, and market forecasting.
- Conduct asset- and region-level research on power plants, transmission projects, and market trends to identify trading opportunities.
- Monitor and summarize regulatory, legislative, and stakeholder meetings (e.g., CAISO, Northwest hydro coordination, FERC, WECC) to assess potential pricing and market impacts.
- Develop and maintain dashboards, models, and analytical tools using Python, R, SQL, or Excel/VBA to support trading decisions.
- Collaborate with other teams to improve business processes, data quality, and information workflows across trading operations.
- Maintain compliance with all corporate trading policies, codes of conduct, and reporting requirements.
- Opportunity to progress to a congestion or virtual trading role in CAISO and/or SPP markets.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Engineering, Physics, or related quantitative discipline.
- Experience: 2–5 years of relevant experience in energy markets, trading analytics, or power system operations.- Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Excel and at least one programming language (e.g., Python, SQL, R, MATLAB, or C++).
- Familiarity with YES Energy, CAISO OASIS, or SPP Marketplace Portal is an asset.
- Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau) is an asset.
- Familiarity with optimal power flow modeling software such as PROMOD, DAYZER, AURORA, or UPLAN-NPM is an asset.
- Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage and analyze complex data.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating within a dynamic trading environment.
