The Plant Operator is responsible for the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of the hydrogen production facility. This role includes monitoring process parameters, performing routine maintenance, troubleshooting equipment, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives. The operator will also be expected to work independently, including during lone worker moments, while maintaining operational safety and reliability.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Operations & Monitoring:
•Operate and monitor hydrogen / syngas production and auxiliary equipment, including compressors, heaters, pumps, coolers, valves, etc.
•Track process parameters, such as temperature, pressure, and flow rates, and make necessary adjustments to maintain optimal performance.
•Utilize Distributed Control Systems (DCS) or SCADA systems for real-time process monitoring control, and trend analysis to optimize plant performance.
•Conduct routine plant inspections to identify leaks, abnormal conditions, or equipment malfunctions.
•Perform start-up, shutdown, and emergency response procedures in accordance with established protocols.
•Coordinate with the control room and field personnel to ensure smooth and safe operations.
•Operate under lone worker conditions when required, following all safety procedures and communication protocols.
2. Maintenance & Troubleshooting:
•Assist in troubleshooting process and equipment issues to minimize downtime.
•Perform minor maintenance tasks, such as filter changes, valve replacements, and instrumentation calibration.
•Support maintenance teams during major repairs and preventive maintenance activities.
•Report equipment deficiencies and document work orders in the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
•Analyze plant performance trends to predict maintenance needs, prevent downtime, and improve efficiency
3. Safety & Environmental Compliance:
•Adhere to all safety procedures, policies, and regulations, including OSHA, EPA, and company-specific requirements.
•Participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks, and hazard assessments.
•Ensure compliance with hydrogen safety protocols, including leak detection, purging, and proper handling of compressed gases.
•Conduct gas detection monitoring and ensure proper use of PPE when working in hazardous areas.
•Respond to emergencies, including leaks, fires, or equipment failures, following established emergency response plans.
•Maintain environmental compliance by monitoring emissions, wastewater treatment, and handling of hazardous materials.
•Follow lone worker safety protocols, including regular check-ins and emergency response procedures.
•Lead incident investigations and implement corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence.
4. Quality Assurance & Process Optimization:
•Collect and analyze gas samples to ensure product purity meets specifications.
•Maintain detailed records of plant performance, logs, and shift reports.
•Identify opportunities for process improvements and efficiency gains.
•Work with engineering teams to implement operational enhancements and upgrades.
5. Documentation & Reporting:
•Maintain accurate operational logs and update shift handover reports.
•Document process deviations, incidents, and corrective actions.
•Assist in the development and revision of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
•Ensure compliance with regulatory documentation requirements.
•Document troubleshooting strategies and best practices.
6. Team Collaboration & Training:
•Work collaboratively with plant personnel, maintenance teams, and management.
•Provide training to new operators and assist in skills development for team members.
•Participate in cross-functional team initiatives, such as Lean Manufacturing and 5S programs.
•Support external audits and customer inspections as required.
7. Inventory & Resource management:
•Manage plant inventory, including hydrogen cylinders, heating pads, and critical spare parts to ensure operational readiness,
•Conduct routine inventory checks, track usage patterns, and coordinate with procurement teams to maintain optimal stock levels,
Ensure proper storage, labeling, and documentation of all materials to meet safety and regulatory standards.
Qualifications & Experience:
Required:
•High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
•Minimum of 5 years of experience in plant operations, preferably in hydrogen production, refining, or chemical processing.
•Knowledge of process control systems (DCS/SCADA).
•Familiarity with rotating equipment, compressors, and gas separation technologies.
•Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, process flow diagrams, and technical manuals.
•Understanding of industrial safety regulations and hazardous material handling.
•Ability to work independently, including during lone worker moments, while ensuring safe operations.
Preferred:
•Associate's degree or technical certification in Process Technology, Industrial Operations, or a related field.
•Experience with hydrogen/syngas equipment and operations.
•Knowledge of regulatory requirements, including OSHA PSM (Process Safety Management) and EPA regulations.
•Forklift and crane operation certification (if applicable).
