This position is located in Fort Simpson, NT (this position does require the successful candidate to reside in Fort Simpson; it is NOT a rotational/fly-in position)
The Plant Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation and day to day routine maintenance of the Fort Simpson plant engines, associated auxiliary equipment, plant grounds and fences. To participate as a member of the Operations Group in determining department objectives andpriorities and to undertake cross training in other program areas as determined by the work group.
•Always work safely, adhere to all aspects of the NTPC Health & Safety and Environmental programs, comply with all rules & regulations, and continually practice health & safety while performing any duties.
•Starts and stops diesel engines as per operational requirements.
•Synchronises and disconnects generators to and from system buss through manual operation and/or use of remote Programmable Logic Controller.
•Monitors and operates units, plants, and auxiliary equipment as per operational requirements, and manufacturer's recommendations and completes required logs of readings.
•Applies for, receives and interprets Work Protection Code applications.
•Performs or assists with preventative maintenance and over-hauls on units, plants auxiliary equipment, transmission lines and sub-stations as per preventative maintenance schedule.
•Prepares and monitors units, plants and equipment for standby condition.
•Reviews and maintains plant log books.
•Monitor, assist and report progress of outside contractors. Complete daily, weekly and monthly plant / unit reports.
•Inspects and maintains tank farms, fuel transfer lines and pump houses, and fuel tank levels, and reports any unusual conditions immediately.
•Clears entrances/exits of snow and debris, sweeps and washes floors, inspects and services emergency lighting and exit signs to ensure buildings and property are maintained in a safe, clean manner.
•Assist in system restoration following a system disturbance manually restoring the system if necessary.
•All other duties as required.
•High school diploma plus a minimum of one year related mechanical and/or electrical experience. Equivalencies may be considered.
•A course in power engineering, building maintenance or electrical/mechanical would be considered an asset.
•Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and verbal form, as well as work with minimal supervision.
•Ability to work in a team environment.
•Knowledge of safety regulations and procedures, with a strong commitment to personal safety and safe working practices.
•Must be able to deal with more than than one issue at a time, assign priorities to problems, and respond to phone calls.
•This position requires freedom of movement and physical strength to handle heavy items in performing a variety of maintenance acitivities. Must also be comfortable working at height.
•Full Class 5 driver's license is required.
•Satisfactory criminal record check.
This is a bargaining unit position. Salary for this position ranges from $42.96/hr to $52.18/hr, in addition to the location allowance of $6,184 per annum.
