Position Summary

Maintains some of the most important, expensive, and sensitive equipment CPS Energy operates for Power Generation. Responsible for the installation and maintenance of DCS control systems, Programmable Logic Control (PLC) software, Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems, Water Quality Analysis Systems, control valves and critical instrumentation at all Power Plants. Performs new control system installations, critical loop calibrations and plant performance testing. Maintains generator voltage regulators, demineralizers and other environmental control equipment that is analyzed by the EPA. The Technicians are required to be available 24/7 for emergency repairs on boilers, turbine/generators, coal conveyor systems, and other systems applicable to the power plant to which the Technician is assigned. Responsible for the maintenance and integrity of the Control systems network which includes Boiler Controls, Turbine Controls, Burner Controls, Plant Historian, Data Acquisition Systems and Graphics. Maintains all software backups, network domain securities, user accounts, software, and hardware upgrades. Responsible for programming, tuning, and troubleshooting of all control schemes, logic, alarms, and graphic changes. Maintains the entire DCS and approximately 40 PC’s at each site which run control systems specific hardware and software needed to interact with the plant DCS and maintain NERC compliance.


Tasks And Responsibilities

Performs maintenance, calibration, testing, commissioning and troubleshooting on controls and instrumentation equipment including control valves, pressure transmitters, flow transmitters, thermocouples, level transmitters, variable frequency drives, motor operated actuators, pneumatic actuators, hydraulic control systems, etc.
Performs maintenance, commissioning, testing and troubleshooting on existing control systems including but not limited to Distributed Control Systems, Turbine Controls Systems and Programmable Logic Control Systems, demineralizer control systems, continuous emission monitoring systems (CEMS), and various other power generation equipment.
Reviews and updates all power generation schematic drawings to include A.C., D.C., wiring diagrams, interconnect drawings, etc., and determine whether they are consistent with CPS Energy’s design philosophy and make corrections in the field with minimum supervision.
Completes test forms and enters test results to maintain compliance with the Texas Reliability Entity (TRE) and Texas Department of Licensing Regulations.
Coordinates with other departments to ensure that jobs are completed with the least amount of disruption to customers or the electric system and in a safe and timely fashion.
Perform federally mandated (NERC) testing/training on various systems according to NERC standards and document results.
Perform 24-7 Call-Duty on a rotational basis to respond to abnormal system conditions.
Performs in-depth troubleshooting on new control systems including field devices.
Responsible for programming, tuning and troubleshooting of all control schemes, logic, alarms and graphic changes.
Performs plant performance testing using hand tools, power tools, personal computer, and analyzers.
Interfaces with other Plant Operations and Maintenance personnel in operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting of related systems.
Works for extended periods of time in the shop or in the field.
May travel for training purposes or factory acceptance testing of new systems.
Maintains all software backups at each plant in collaboration with PG IT.
Maintains network domain securities and user accounts for NERC compliance.
Plan outage work scope for instrumentation and controls and work extended hours to meet plant needs.
Lead Contractors in I&C discipline and provides QA/QC for work of contractors to ensure that CPS Energy's standards are met.
Provide field engineering support and training to other departments in the wiring and commissioning of the power generation equipment and control systems.
Plant liaison for internal and external customers to ensure essential data is accurate and available.
Perform tasks in inclement weather and hazardous environments.
Practices situational leadership, safety and environmental stewardship.
Dependable, reliable, and predictable attendance is required.
Performs other duties as assigned


Minimum Skills


Minimum Knowledge and Abilities

Must have completed I&C Technician progression plan requisites for consideration to I&C Technician III at CPS Energy or have completed an equivalent plan in a power generation or other industrial environment.


Requirements

Successful completion of the following training courses and qualifiers are part of the requirements for maintaining I&C Technician III and eligibility for consideration for promotion to System Specialist:

Process Control, Process Control Qualifier, Motor Operated Valves, Circuit Wiring, Allen Bradley RSLogix PLC, Allen Bradley RSLogix PLC Qualifier, Required safety and regulatory classes.

Expert experience in the following areas: process control, motor operated valves, pneumatical control valves, hydraulic control valves, and general circuit wiring.

Expert proficiency in DCS, PLC, and Networking programs and programming, such as Allen Bradley RSLogix PLC, Ovation, Honeywell, GE Mark 6e, and other Power Plant controls systems.

Expert ability to perform maintenance and calibrations on pressure transmitters, level transmitters, flow transmitters, pressure switches, thermocouples, RTD’s and Smart instrumentation devices (HART protocol).


Expert ability to operate instrumentation test equipment.

Proficient in Microsoft Office Package, including word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation software, electronic mail and scheduling.

Expert skill in installing, calibrating, operating, troubleshooting, repair and maintenance, and general knowledge of the principles, practices, and equipment associated with industrial instrumentation and electrical equipment.

Advanced knowledge of the standard practices and terminology of the electrical trade.

Advanced knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions required for working in a Power Plant environment.


Analytical, quantitative, testing and systems designing skills.

Expert ability to accurately read and understand warnings, manuals and interpret drawings, sketches, and schematics.

Expert ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Expert ability to diagnose improper operation of equipment or devices and to take proper corrective or remedial action.


Expert ability to complete records and reports.

Minimum Education

Associates Degree in the Instrumentation and Controls from an accredited Technical School or State College, or equivalent military industrial controls training, or equivalent work experience in instrumentation and controls field in lieu of degree.


Required Certifications


Working Environment

Indoor work, operating computer, manual dexterity, talking, hearing, repetitive motion. Use of personal computing equipment, telephone, multi-functioning printer and calculator.

Ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions or other business related events.


Physical Demands

Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking & standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.
