Job Description:

An opportunity currently exists for an Electrical Engineer within the Project Development Department of AltaLink. Reporting to the Manager of P&C, SCADA & Telecom Engineering, the successful candidate will work with internal and external technical staff to ensure that all additions and modifications to AltaLink’s transmission assets meet quality standards from a protection and control (P&C) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) perspective.

As such, this individual will provide technical leadership at all critical project phases from planning through to implementation and final acceptance.  This position will appeal to individuals with a utility P&C, Substation Networking, Remote Supervisory, and Distributed Control Engineering background who are looking for an opportunity to develop their engineering and leadership talents in a dynamic utility environment.


Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be accountable for the following:

Provide timely and effective P&C and SCADA technical input into conceptual engineering, project scoping & estimating and project execution. This includes:

+ Create and support writing of Design Basis memorandums (DBM) that provide sufficient detail to allow accurate estimating and clear direction to the Engineering contractor; + Review technical drawings & specifications to ensure each project meets acceptable standards for operability, functionality, maintainability, reliability, durability and safety; + Answer EPCM contractors’ questions to ensure each project meets acceptable standards for operability, functionality, maintainability, reliability, durability and safety;

Design or review Protection Settings for AltaLink’s new and existing Transmission System and provide technical support during construction;

Working as part of a project design team, complete the SCADA design of facilities including station drawings and SCADA device (e.g. RTU) configuration. Deliver accurate and thorough designs that will meet specifications in the electrical code, AltaLink standards and engineering practices; and are compatible with good construction practices and overall due diligence;
Install SCADA configuration files and provide technical support during construction to the site personnel completing commissioning activities;
Maintain timely and effective communication with the appropriate internal and external personnel in support of each of these processes; and
Maintain effective working relationships with suppliers, partners and internal clients that result in growing understanding, good decisions, and effective cooperation.

Requirements

Minimum qualifications for this position are as follows:

Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Telecommunication or Computer Engineering;

Registered or qualifies for registration as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Engineers & Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA);
A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, job level will be considered and evaluated based on the candidate’s overall experience and knowledge;
Effective communication and interpersonal skills to interface with team members and customers to promote positive customer outcomes;
Positively influence others;
Demonstrated strong analytical, risk assessment and problem solving skills;
Strong written, reporting, graphical and oral presentation skills;
Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage a wide variety of issues simultaneously;
Willing to travel within the province approximately 20% of the time;
Valid driver’s license; and
Proven track record of good attendance and performance.

Experience with the following would be an asset:

Technical knowledge and understanding of electric transmission system operation, maintenance, performance, power equipment and substation design;
Familiar with Protection and Control philosophies, schemes, and standards;
Formal Protection and Control training;

+ Working knowledge of MathCAD, CAPE , Microsoft Word, and Excel including the use of macros;

Excellent knowledge of modern digital protective relays in utility applications and experience calculating relay settings;

SCADA Systems and DNP3;
Familiarity with local area networks, communication schemes, platforms and protocols used to provide local and remote interrogation with substation relays, meters, fault recorders and other intelligent electronic devices (IEDs);
Familiarity with SEL, Siemens, and GE numerical relays;
GE Energy/Harris, Cybectec/Copper Power Systems, Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, or SUBNET Solutions SCADA platforms
Config Pro 5, SMP Tools, Substation Explorer, Substation Server, AcSELerator Quickset, or AcSELerator RTAC;
Siemens, Hirschmann, and Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories LAN hardware; and
Schneider Electric and Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories Power Measurement meters
