Job Summary
NAES Corporation is seeking an Outside Operator for a Central Utility Plant (CUP) in California. Reporting to the Plant Manager, the Outside Operator is responsible for the safe, reliable, and environmentally compliant operation of plant equipment. This role involves operating, monitoring, and performing routine maintenance on a Gas Turbine with Heat Recovery Boiler, Auxiliary Steam Boilers, Electric and Absorption Chillers, Automation Controls, and all associated balance-of-plant systems. Work is performed both independently and under supervision, with results measured by equipment performance, safety compliance, and adherence to established procedures.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Follow all site safety procedures, identify hazards, and take corrective action to maintain a safe work environment.
- Operate, monitor, and maintain plant equipment while completing accurate logs, records, and reports.
- Maintain and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs); assist in developing new SOPs as directed by Plant Management.
- Investigate and resolve operating abnormalities; assist in preparing Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and event reports for outages or incidents.
- Evaluate operating and maintenance processes, recommending improvements to optimize cost, efficiency, and equipment reliability.
- Use computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) to track work orders, preventive maintenance, and repairs.
- Assist with contractor activities, equipment overhauls, and spare parts planning to support safe and reliable plant operations.
- Strong understanding of plant operations, including gas turbines, steam systems, chillers, cooling towers, water treatment, and related balance-of-plant equipment.
- Hands-on knowledge of DCS/PLC systems, mechanical systems, hydraulics, electrical systems, and instrumentation.
- Ability to read and apply technical drawings (P&IDs, schematics, single-line diagrams, blueprints) for troubleshooting and problem-solving.
- Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), preventive maintenance programs, and spare parts tracking.
- Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office (Excel, Word).
- Effective oral and written communication skills to work with plant staff, contractors, and vendors.
- Ability to monitor plant performance metrics and recommend adjustments to ensure safe and efficient operation.
- Frequently stand, walk, sit, climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch or occasionally crawl
- Lift objects of up to 50 pounds in weight. Carry objects of up to 35 pounds in weight. Occasionally push or pull objects 70 pounds in weight
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
- 5+ years related technical experience in operations and maintenance.- Prior Cogen/Combined Utilities Plant experience
- Solid IC&E experience strongly preferred.
Compensation
The hourly rate for this position generally ranges between $50-$55.
