Solar Turbines Incorporated, headquartered in San Diego, California, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Caterpillar Inc. Solar manufactures the world’s most widely used family of mid-sized industrial gas turbines, ranging from 1 to 23 megawatts. Solar is a leading provider of energy solutions, featuring an extensive line of gas turbine-powered compressor sets.


Job Summary


Nature and Scope:

Plans, schedules, leads, and oversees the execution of broad firm-business turbomachinery projects which could exceed $30 million in revenue. The scope of this position includes all of the technical aspects of the project. The scope also includes the planning, design, procurement, assembly, test, shipment and commissioning of these complex projects. This position provides technical direction to lower-level project engineers.


Knowledge:

A thorough knowledge of the principles relating to the design and operation of gas turbines and their driven equipment as well as their auxiliary and control systems. The ability to apply these principles and procedures to the direction of other disciplines and to direct people of lesser experience in the performance of turbine package engineering assignments relative to the support of turbomachinery projects. This individual must be sufficiently familiar with Solar’s organization and practices to direct a wide-range of activities to accomplish project requirements. The individual in this position must be highly familiar with design and manufacturing practices typical to projects of this type.


Problem Complexity:

Typically develops solution to highly complex technical and problems. Applies advanced knowledge and experience rather than fixed "textbook" methods. Must be able to achieve coordination of complex projects by working with design and production planning specialists. Independent and thorough reasoning and rapid response to production stoppage, developing schedules, or potential field problems. The individual in this position usually coaches and mentors other project engineers.


Work Direction and Latitude:

Exercises considerable latitude in determination of technical objectives. Would typically work with the project manager to direct entire project from receipt of order to commissioning of the turbomachinery. Individual must be innovative and inventive to solve highly technical or complex project problems.


Liaison:

Represents the Business Management organization and is the technical leader responsible for the execution of complex projects. Represents Solar outwardly to the Customer and represents the Customer inwardly to Solar. Interfaces with internal management of the Company as well as customers. Internal contacts may be in all major business units of the Company worldwide. External contacts are technical leaders of major clients and sub-suppliers.


Principal Accountabilities:

Provides technical leadership from receipt of order to installation and commissioning of turbomachinery equipment.
Works in concert with Business Development to obtain proper early project definition, and review and reconcile the customer’s specifications and purchase order against Solar’s proposal, including comments to customer specifications and the ACS.
Works in concert with the assigned Project Manager to arrive at a plan and strategy to resolve conflicting requirements.
Responsible for the soundness of technical design and application of equipment as well as sound business practice.
Responsible for the acceptability of quality and design of turbine package equipment delivered to the customer within the confines of the contract.
Responsible for communicating technical risks that might affect schedule or project profitability.
Applies project strategy as defined by project manager lead.
May be the designated PE for Alliance projects.
Ensures technical strategy is well understood throughout the manufacturing and engineering project team.
Responsible for revisions to the ACS and the timely communication of the changes to the project team.
Provides engineering information and technical risks in support of cost estimate preparation.
Ensures resolution of technical and/or definition issues that may be an impediment to delivering the product in a quality and timely fashion.
Represents customers’ interests with respect to quality problem resolution.
Provides feedback to allow engineering to improve their quality and processes.
Establishing a good working relationship with Solar’s customers, suppliers, customers’ subcontractors and major internal Engineering and Manufacturing support groups is crucial.


Business Contribution:

Major contribution to achievement of Company objectives through realization of project profitability; customer satisfaction with the execution of project schedule; quality of drawings and equipment delivered; primary representative of the Company to the customer from receipt of order to commissioning.


Basic Qualifications:

11 years of experience in roles with increasing responsibility
Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering, or related technical field
Willingness to travel up to 50%
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Knowledge of Solar Turbines Business Acumen

Summary Pay Range:


$125,925.00 - $188,887.00

Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
