Network Engineer

Reports to: Broadband Services Superintendent

Job Summary: This position is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining HBPW fiber optic network systems that deliver reliable LAN, WAN, and internet services to internal and external customers.

Essential Duties

- Design, implement, configure, and manage LAN and WAN networks.

- Develop standards for network systems, including standards for wiring, equipment, system security, and routing protocols.

- Assist in developing policies, procedures, and standards relating to network operations.

- Assist various departments with budgeting and planning for networking equipment and software.

- Formulate, develop, and implement integrated network architectures.

- Provide project management in the implementation, installation, configuration, and technical networking support.

- Assist with network and computer security.

- Coordinate network needs with application developers and users.

- Provide after-hours on-call support as required.

- Perform all other tasks as assigned.

Essential Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or Network Engineering or equivalent education and experience.

- At least four years experience in computer and telecommunications networking.

- Comprehensive knowledge of network configuration and installation.

- Project management experience, including managing contracted construction services.

- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.

- Interpersonal skills necessary to provide courteous and accurate information and responses to contractors, vendors, and various levels of organizational personnel.

- Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the telecommunications trade.

Preferred Qualifications

- CCNA, CCNP, or equivalent certifications

- Experience with Extreme, Cisco, Nokia and/or Calix networking equipment.

- Experience with routing protocols, including BGP and OSPF.

- Effective workplace skills as demonstrated through WorkKeys assessments (Workplace Documents – 5, Applied Math – 5, Graphic Literacy – 5).

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

- Normal office environment with minimum discomfort due to noise, dirt, and dust.

- Work includes occasional exposure to adverse weather conditions, fumes, odors, noise, dust, dirt, etc.

- Mental ability to frequently handle pressures related to working on multiple projects requiring attention to detail.
