Under the general supervision of the Meter Services Supervisor. This position facilitates continuing water services to the public by providing skilled maintenance services. This is accomplished by setting, maintaining, programming, repairing and/or replacing new and existing water meters and associated infrastructure. Other duties include testing meters for and with customers and educating or responding to customer questions regarding the water meter infrastructure or utility billing processes.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
· Provides premier customer service to customers by responding to customer inquiries and infrastructure issues via service order.
· Meets with customers by appointment on site to assist with resolution of questions and issues and educates customers on reading meters, performing verifications of remote reads and assisting customers with leak evaluations.
· Sets, maintains, repairs, replaces and programs water meters and associated infrastructure; Inspects meters and associated infrastructure for proper operation, evaluates meter transmission unit (MTU) for continuity and repairs (including splicing wires) or replaces unit as required, inspects meter register for proper performance and replaces, if necessary, programs MTU when either the MTU or the meter is repaired or replaced to ensure reading radio signal is accurate.
· Maintains, repairs, and/or replaces water meter infrastructure by changing out damaged or non-functional meter boxes and angle stops, replaces meter gaskets/washers and repairs or replaces meter lids and meter boxes.
· Disconnects water service and locks meter, if required, due to non-payment or non-compliance. Reconnects service after payment issues are resolved.
· Monitors water meter specific parts and supplies inventory. Monitors stock levels of meters, MTU’s, lids, boxes and associated equipment and tools.
· Investigates and reports unauthorized usage of water.
· Operates specialized equipment related to assignments such as meter reading devices.
· Works with the Utility Billing Specialist to identify any meter reading discrepancies.
· Assists others within the department as necessary and other essential or marginal functions as determined by Supervisor.

· Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license, and have an acceptable driving record.
· Required on-call rotation and some afterhours work.
· Obtain and Maintain a Water Operator Certification
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from Department Heads, clients, customers, and the general public.
Knowledge of basic accounting and bookkeeping principles and practices. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
