Q.C. Metallurgical Laboratory Inc. has been in the field of metallurgical and material testing for over 40 years. QCML is an A2LA accredited laboratory to ISO 17025: 2017 We are a small business and are looking for an experienced metallurgical engineer that enjoys working on diverse issues related to material testing, investigations and technical applications.
The Metallurgical Engineer is responsible for leading and directing the daily activities of the laboratory to meet customer needs and expectations for materials testing and evaluations. The metallurgical engineer will also be responsible for performing independent work, such as failure analysis, metallographic testing, guiding the work of others, providing technical leadership, working with management, and interacting with customers. Other responsibilities include maintaining high degree of knowledge and proficiency in material science and serving as resident expert in area of specialty.
- Conduct metallurgical materials testing, material evaluations, and failure analyses. Operate metallurgical equipment and understand the theory, QC requirements, and limitations of the chemical, mechanical and metallographic testing equipment.
- Provide expert opinions to steel manufactures customers related to melt chemistry, refining, metallography microstructure, heat treatment, plating/coating, and defect analysis.
- Conduct root cause failure analysis based on SEM fractographic analysis; fracture mechanics, mechanical, chemical, and metallographic evaluation of the material/part.
- Prepare quotes, review material testing reports, and assure work completion in a high quality and timely manner.
- Interface with customers as necessary to assure that a high level of customer satisfaction is maintained.
- Assist in maintaining our A2LA Accreditation to ISO 17025: 2017
- Establish and maintain department procedures consistent with the ISO 17025: 2017 Quality Assurance Manual.
- Exhibit and maintain a high level of engineering skills.
- Keep abreast of new developments in the field of metallurgy and provide technical leadership in laboratory growth areas.
- Serve as a resident expert and a technical resource for our customers.
- Maintain professional visibility through activities in professional organizations.
- Recommend and justify the procurement of capital equipment to maintain an appropriate level of competence in current and advanced metallic materials technology.
- Bachelor of Science degree in Material Science or Metallurgical Engineering.
- Minimum of 10 year's work experience in the field of materials/metallurgical engineering and conducting root cause failure analysis
- Highly proficient in conducting root cause failure analysis with indepth knowledge of of various types of failures; Fatigue, Overload, Creep, Corrosion and Embrittlement
- Experience in overseeing a materials testing laboratory
- Demonstrated ability to work with metallurgical tools, equipment and instrumentation, such as SEM, SEM-EDS, Microhardness tester, digital/optical microscope/stereoscope, metallurgical software programs for metallographic analysis, general microstructure, etching, grainsize, inclusion rating, graphite and carbide evaluation, delta ferrite, coating thickness, weld evaluations (measurements, penetration, etc..).
- Demonstrated proficiency in and knowledge of diverse range of specifications and methodologies.
- Demonstrated project management skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; strong customer service focus.
