Job Title: Mechanical or Stack Engineer
Location: Houston, TX
About Solidec
Solidec is the path to emission-free molecules. We make low-cost chemicals and fuels out of thin air, offering the potential to reduce up to 40% of industrial carbon emissions. With our breakthrough technology, it is our mission to reverse decades of emissions and produce low-cost, sustainable chemicals for years to come.
Position Overview
We are looking for a mechanical/stack engineer to lead the design, prototyping, testing, and scale-up of our next-generation electrochemical reactor stacks. This role is central to advancing Solidec’s core technology and product roadmap. You will be responsible for designing flow fields, seals, current collectors, and housing components, ensuring high performance, manufacturability, and durability across operating conditions. The role spans from first-principles design and rapid prototyping to manufacturing support and field validation. This is a highly interdisciplinary position requiring close collaboration with electrochemical and process engineers.
What You’ll Be Doing
•Lead the design, development, testing, and optimization of critical stack components
•Optimize fluid flow distribution and heat transfer within the stack, using computational techniques like CFD to maximize stack performance and durability
•Analyze and optimize stack to ensure robust sealing and uniform compression under various operating conditions
•Develop detailed CAD models, engineering drawings, and manufacturing documentation for components
•Conduct tolerance analysis and define mechanical assembly protocols for scale-up
•Collaborate cross-functionally with electrochemical engineer, R&D engineer, and process/controls engineers to deliver integrated reactor solutions
•Develop test fixtures and tools for stack performance validation
•Analyzing data and presenting results to our technical team
What We’re Looking For
•Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field of study
•Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field of study OR 5+ years of industrial experience with electrochemical cell stacks (e.g., fuel cells, electrolyzers, or electrodialysis)
•Hands-on experience with electrochemical system design >1 kW capacity and characterization techniques
•Proficient in CAD (SolidWorks preferred) and CFD tools (e.g., COMSOL, Fluent)
•Strong understanding of stack mechanics, sealing design, and thermal management
•Familiarity with tolerance analysis and modular assembly
•Experience with prototype fabrication, testing, and debugging of mechanical systems
•Demonstrated ability to take complex mechanical components from concept to design, prototyping, and production
•Ability to learn/work efficiently
•Strong communication skills (written and oral)
•Prioritization of safety in the laboratory
•Ability to move 25 pounds
Characteristics We’re Looking For
•Individuals with enthusiasm and conviction for creating global impact
•Innovators to develop transformative solutions
•Engineers who thrive in fast-paced, high-ownership environments
•Collaborators who excel in working with others
•Problem-solvers with a can-do mindset who can navigate uncertainty and iterate quickly
