BRIEF POSTING DESCRIPTION:

The P PW WORKERS COMPENSATION Department of the P VP ENTERPRISE OPER SVCS Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available. (Role: Manager Supervisor)


JOB FUNCTION:

Develops, maintains, and manages the company’s workers’ compensation program, including the return-to-work programs, that meets organizational goals of employee coverage, support, and cost effectiveness. Directs all claim activities, including claim investigation, settlement, litigation, to ensure accurate and timely disposition of claims in accordance with company protocols and statutory requirements. Provides strategic direction and recommendation to leadership regarding improving the performance of the workers’ compensation program.



ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Develops policies and strategies to manage the Company’s workers’ compensation program through ongoing evaluation and implementation of cost containment measures.
Oversees the end-to-end management of workers’ compensation claims, ensuring timely reporting, investigation, and resolution. Acts as the primary liaison between injured employees, third-party administrators (TPA), insurers, risk management, claims and legal counsel. Ensures all claims are managed appropriately and on time; obtains a detailed account of the injury; requests records from medical professional, as appropriate; and regularly in communication with claimants and the medical professionals concerning the status of the injury and plans for treatment.
Works closely with TPA, insurers, risk management, claims and legal teams to ensure effective claims handling and cost containment. Review claim reserves and settlement recommendations, advocating in the best interest of the company. Develops strategies to mitigate all litigated workers’ compensation claims.
Develops return-to-work programs to minimize lost time and promote employee recovery. Collaborate closely with Safety, Human Resources, and Operations teams to develop and implement injury prevention programs.
Analyzes claims data to identify trends and recommends proactive risk management strategies.
Provides guidance on workers’ compensation policies and procedures for all employees, including training policies, injury prevention, and best practices.
Secures and maintains systems for the administration of the workers’ compensation program. Ensure detailed documentation of all work-related incidents, injuries, and illnesses are maintained.
Manages financial costs of the workers’ compensation program, including the development, maintenance and forecasting of proper claim reserves.
Develops internal and external cost analyses and other statutory reports. Ensures that the Company’s workers’ compensation program is in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. Maintains accurate records and reports to meet regulatory and internal audit requirements.
Responsible for performance and activities of direct reports to include setting and communicating performance standards, allocation of workload, goal setting, on-going coaching, training and development, evaluating performance, recognizing employee achievements, counseling, and initiating disciplinary action where appropriate. Develops engaging high performing team with capability to meet organizational goals/activities.
Monitors legislative activities related to workers’ compensation on behalf of the Company.

Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.



BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:


Knowledge Requirements

Broad knowledge of federal and state workers’ compensation laws and OSHA regulations.
Working knowledge of Appeals Board Administrative Proceedings, Vocational Rehabilitation Rules and Regulations, insurance/medical/legal fundamentals & terminology.
Working knowledge of policies and procedures contained in such company documents such as the Collective Bargaining Agreement, General Information Manual, Accident Prevention Manual, etc.

Working knowledge of employment and labor trends, practices and laws such as Americans with Disabilities Act, Family Medical Leave Act, Equal Employment Opportunity, etc.
Thorough knowledge of personal computers and related software applications, such as Workers’ Compensation, report writer, spreadsheets, word processing, databases, and presentation graphics.
Working knowledge of budgeting and forecasting processes.



Skills Requirements

Demonstrated ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
Ability to handle and resolve difficult and/or sensitive issues using tact, courtesy, and discretion
Effective conflict resolution/communication/negotiation skills to appropriately resolve complex issues including coordination of litigated claims.
Excellent analytical, organizational, and conceptual skills for such tasks as preparing, monitoring and analyzing forecasts, preparing performance appraisals and conducting interviews, and carrying out Company/department policies and procedures.
Demonstrated supervisory/leadership skills and the ability to work with a variety of individuals dealing with sensitive, difficult, or confrontational issues.
Excellent written, oral, listening, and presentation/platform skills.
Excellent interpersonal skills.
Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and ability to handle multiple priorities.



Experience Requirements

Multiple (5-7) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in workers’ compensation, managed care, or claims management programs.
Several (3-5) years’ experience in supervising and directing the work of other professionals.

Hiring Range: The hiring range for the Mgr, Workers' Compensation [Req ID 9775] position is $97,900.00 to $125,000.00. The person selected will be placed according to his/her skills and qualifications.
