Under the direction of Distribution System Supervisor (DSS) assist and learn to perform work involved with the installation, rearrangement, maintenance, operation, removal, and inspection of electrical transmission and distribution facilities. All job duties apply to overhead and underground equipment and facilities.
1) Learn and apply all AEP, Operating Company, and Site- Specific Safety rules to perform assigned duties. Participate in safety tailboard, Job Safety Analysis (JSA), and safety meetings.
2) Observe and learn the assembly, installation, maintenance, removal and competently inspect underground facilities, conductors, fixtures, structures and other associated equipment on de-energized and grounded overhead and underground facilities under direct or immediate supervision.
3) Climb poles, towers and ladders and demonstrate evidence of being at ease above ground level during the performance of work tasks under immediate or direct supervision.
4) Demonstrate the ability to competently perform ground person duties under immediate or direct supervision.
5) Learn and assist with loading, unloading, handling, maintaining, installing and removing poles, towers and structures.
6) Assemble and install line material and hardware under direct or immediate supervision.
7) Use and store hand lines, tie knots and demonstrate a basic working knowledge with ropes and rigging equipment inspection and use.
8) Splice primary and secondary overhead wires using the proper tools, hardware and equipment (including crimping and compression tools).
9) Learn to use, inspect and maintain tools and equipment applicable to work duties.
10) Identify, inspect, use and maintain all classes of rubber gloves and sleeves(PIPE), and insulating blankets, hoses and covers(IPE).
11) Inspect, maintain, organize, operate and stock company vehicles, equipment and tools.
15) Set and remove barricades, flags, signs, cones and associated equipment.
16) Correctly read and record information and registered readings on analog or digital Kilowatt-hour meters.
17) Perform similar or less skilled work as assigned.
High school diploma or GED. Currently enrolled in a post secondary 2-year Lineman Program with a Technical School/College and fulfilled all school requirements and is eligible for internship.
Maintain passing grades and a 3.0 GPA with the Technical School/College.
Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license. Must be eligible to acquire CDL.

Intern must live within a 30 minute distance under normal driving conditions to the applicable Operation Center.

Company. Must be able to learn and comply with the rules, safety practices and procedures applicable to the work environment and report unsafe conditions and practices. Must learn and have a working knowledge of Safety and Environmental guidelines. Must effectively communicate with co-workers, supervision, internal, and external customers. Demonstrate professional conduct and effective interactions with employees, contractors and others. Must be willing to work overtime, weekends, nights, and holidays and respond to callouts in both outage and non- outage work to maintain and support business operational needs and schedules. Must be able to read, interpret and work from simple prints and specifications. Must be willing and able to elevated areas and in hot and cold temperatures.
The Physical Demand Level for this job is: M – Medium Work: Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
