Job Overview: Jewett City Department of Public Utilities is seeking a motivated and safety-focused individual for the position of Lineman Learner / Apprentice Lineman. This is a four-year apprenticeship program designed to provide the training and experience necessary to become a fully qualified Journeyman Lineman. Work involves maintenance, construction, repair of electric distribution systems, meters, and substation equipment under the supervision of experienced personnel. This position requires a strong commitment to learning, teamwork, and safety.
Key Responsibilities: Training and Development: Enroll and actively participate in the NEPPA Lineman Training Program. Complete required NEPPA modules and on-the-job assessments and demonstrate mastery of concepts. System Maintenance and Construction: Assist with overhead and underground distribution work. Operate bucket trucks, digger derricks, and various power tools. Substation Work: Assist with inspection, maintenance, and repairs on substation equipment. Support switching operations under supervision. Meter Work: Install, read, program and calibrate electric meters. Assist in meter disconnects and theft investigations. Vehicle, Equipment, and Facility Care: Perform routine maintenance of utility trucks and shop equipment. Maintain building grounds, including snow removal and mowing. Other Duties: Participate in emergency response and mutual aid when needed. Perform other related duties assigned by supervision. Qualifications: Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent (GED). Basic knowledge of electrical theory and mechanical aptitude. Licensing and Certification: Valid Connecticut Driver’s License at time of hire. Must obtain a CDL Class A within six (6) months of hire. Skills and Abilities: Ability to climb poles and work at heights. Ability to work irregular hours and out of town assignments as required. Strong communication and problem-solving skills. This position may be required to work more than 40 hours per week.
