Job Summary:
The Laboratory Technician position will be located in the water treatment laboratory, the applicant will be required to learn the coke and coal side as well, so he/she can fill-in in the case of emergency. Applicant will report to the Manager of Quality Assurance.
MUST BE AVAILABLE TO WORK EVERY WEEKEND 7AM-4PM. MAY CHOOSE THE TWO OFF DAYS YOU PREFER DURING THE WEEK.
Job Responsibilities:
The position will support the water treatment plant with testing of water samples pulled on a daily basis. The laboratory technician will be expected to learn the inner workings of the water treatment plant so that he/she can foresee issues and work closely with the water treatment plant supervisor to correct these issues and prevent future problems from occurring. Specific tasks include, but are not limited to:
•Performing tests on treated waste water to ensure that it is in compliance with ADEM before it is discharged.
•Tests to perform include, but are not limited to, phenolic, total suspended solids, total dissolved solids, ammonia, total cyanide, and carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand.
•Applicant will be required to perform monthly testing on coke oven gas.
•The upkeep and everyday maintenance of laboratory equipment will be one of the laboratory technician’s responsibility, along with inventory of chemicals needed to perform testing.
•Working closely with water treatment supervisor and the environmental manager will be required to ensure all testing meets regulatory specifications.
•Performs tests on coal and coke as needed.
Job Requirements:
•High school diploma or equivalent required
•3-5 years of laboratory experience preferred, but not required
•Basic understanding of water chemistry and laboratory procedures required
•Associates degree in a scientific field preferred, but not required
•Excellent communication skills required; applicant will be interacting with various departments
Skills and Abilities:
•Ability to climb, inspect, and sample rail cars
•Strong analytical and problem solving skills
•Strong initiative and interpersonal skills
•Basic proficiency with standard business software such as Excel and Word
