About the job and your team
The Laboratory Technician is responsible for performing daily metallurgical tests to support our operations. Located at our greenfield production facility in Cassopolis, MI, the North American Technology Center is at the forefront of innovation in aluminum products. This position will work in a highly dynamic team consisting of lab technicians, engineers, and R&D scientists.
You will work on
•Perform sample preparation steps of section, mount, grind, and polish metallurgical test specimens according to internal procedures as outlined per A2LA (American Association for Laboratory Accreditation) and international industry standards.
•Ensure/verify equipment is calibrated before use.
•Handling of chemicals such as acids and caustic solutions.
•Use of testing equipment such as microscopes, harness testers and tensile testers.
•Reporting of test results.
•Occasional communication with customers.
•Support Continuous Improvement activities at HATC.
Your qualifications and skills
•Minimum of two years' experience in a laboratory or testing environment is required.
•An Associate's Degree in a science discipline is required. In exceptional circumstances, a combination of work experience and education can substitute for part of this requirement.
•Excellent written and oral communication skills are required.
•Computer literate, including experience in Microsoft Excel and Word.
•Ability to perform measurements with calipers and micrometers, utilizing both Imperial and Metric measurement systems.
•Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, test methods, procedures, testing specifications, and/or drawings. High level of professionalism, self-drive and enthusiasm
•Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
•Ability to work according to Hydro culture and values, including maintaining a safe work environment.
•Willingness to support this position outside of regular business hours, if needed. This position will have occasional travel (up to 10%).
You would also ideally have
Associate degree in Metallurgy, Material Science, Mechanical Engineering or Quality is desirable.
Experience with any of the following: aluminum in any shape or form; OES (chemistry) testing; optical or scanning electron microscopy; sample mounting and polishing; tensile testing; and/or hardness testing
