Fairfax Water has an immediate opening for an
Instrumentation II/III.
Under close supervision of the Supervisor, Transmission System Operations, supports partial transmission system shutdowns. Supports realignment of pressure zone boundaries as required to facilitate construction, meet operational objectives or respond to emergencies. Assists in performing a variety of skilled mechanical duties required in the operation, maintenance, and repair of water transmission and distribution facilities and equipment including system valves, water storage tanks, and control valves.
Performs a variety of skilled duties required in the operation and maintenance of a large water system by:
- Assisting with water system shutdowns for system maintenance, connection of new or replacement transmission mains, and system repairs.
- Assisting with field operations of the water system, to include shutting down and restoring portions of the water system to:
- Support construction of new water mains.
- Support distribution system maintenance.
- Isolate and repair water main leaks.
- Assists the performance of water main shut downs including operating isolation valves, draining, refilling, and flushing mains and returning mains to service.
- Assists with installing temporary service to critical customers and large areas to alleviate loss of water during partial system shutdowns.
- Locating transmission mains and valves utilizing box locators, installing location signs and recording water system component locations using GPS equipment.
- Assisting with the transfer of water between various pressure zones for such purposes as transmission main repair or relocation projects.
- Responding to site emergencies.
- Maintaining records, maps and reports.
Performs skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of a variety of water supply facilities by:
- Assisting with the inspecting, calibrating, rebuilding, and replacing of a variety of pressure and flow control devices to include pressure reducing, pressure relief, pressure sustaining, tank altitude, and flow control valves.
- Assisting with storage tank maintenance to include such work as draining, cleaning, disinfecting, and filling storage tanks.
- Keeping maintenance vehicles, work areas and tools clean and orderly.
- Operating and maintaining all tools used in the maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment.
- Taking measurements with standard and precision measuring instruments that include tapes, calipers, scales, and micrometers.
- Graduation from high school, supplemented by specialized training courses in water distribution and a minimum of 1 year of experience in the operation, installation or maintenance of water systems and related facilities or any equivalent combination of education, experience and knowledge.
- General knowledge of the materials, tools, and equipment used in the operation, installation and maintenance of the water system and related facilities.
- Knowledge of computer basics, SAP, Microsoft Word and Excel, and GIS.
- .Knowledge of safety equipment and the implementation of safety practices.
- Good organizational skills and mechanical aptitude.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of current safety requirements and procedures.
- Ability to understand basic water system hydraulics and perform basic water system hydraulic calculations.
- Successful completion of applicable hydraulics or distribution operations short course within 1 year.
- Ability to use line locating and GPS equipment.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
- Ability to tactfully and courteously communicate effectively to establish and maintain proper working relationships with co-workers, supervisors and the public.
- Ability to keep records and make reports.
- Must pass a controlled substance (drug) test for employment. This position is also subject to random testing after hire.
- Possession of a valid Virginia Class A Commercial Driver’s License, or ability to obtain within 1 year, and good driving record.
- Ability to serve on rotating stand-by shifts and work overtime.
- Ability to work from any Authority facility other than the principle location.
- Ability to climb ladders, steps, and scaffolding.
- Ability to perform manual physical labor that may include long periods of standing, bending, twisting, stooping and climbing.
- Ability to work in confined spaces and at heights greater than 100 feet.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds.
- Ability to wear a respirator.
