JOB SUMMARY PURPOSE
Under the direction of the Supervisor for Telecom Construction and Maintenance the helper is responsible for assisting the 1st class telecom techs with the general maintenance and/or construction functions of the substation’s telecommunications components and equipment.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
•High School Diploma or equivalent, or equivalent.
•Basic understanding of electricity, AC/DC currents, and proper use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment).
•Knowledge of basic electrical principles and standards, maintenance procedures, repair methods and safety procedures and practices.
•Ability to repair and replace electrical and electronic components, operate hand and electrical tools and equipment, maintain records and work under unusual conditions.
•Computer networking and programming knowledge.
•Knowledge of Fiber, SCADA, Microwave Systems, and Motorola DMR is a plus.
•Valid driver’s license and must comply with the Company’s Driving Policy.
•Must pass a Human Performance Evaluation (HPE).
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
•Installation & Maintenance: Assists 1st class Telecom Techs with the construction and/or maintenance of substation communications components and equipment.
•Assists with the repairs and/or replacements of minor electrical apparatuses and/or communications to substation equipment.
•Testing & Troubleshooting: Inspect and test circuits, diagnose malfunctions, and evaluate system modifications.
•Communication Systems: Work with telecommunications equipment used for monitoring and controlling power systems.
•Run and pull communications cables and fiber.
•Maintains tools and keeps work area, yard, vehicles, and shop clean and in order.
•Inspect batteries and take readings.
•Complies with all applicable Company policies, procedures and code of ethics as well as all applicable governmental laws and regulations to include employment, safety and environmental standards and regulations.
ENVIRONMENTAL/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
•Work Conditions: The incumbents in this classification are subject to both outside and inside environmental conditions and temperatures changes; exposed to loud noises, where the incumbents have to shout in order to be heard; exposed to hazards including a variety of physical conditions, such as a proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, high places, exposure to high heat and/or to chemicals; and exposure to oils or other lubricants that may include skin exposure. Incumbents may be required to wear safety equipment and/or a respirator at times.
•Physical Requirements: Regularly engages in climbing, lifting items up to 50 lbs., bending, extended periods of standing, working at elevated heights, and operating heavy equipment.
•Safety Gear: Must wear hard hats, gloves, safety glasses, and hearing protection.
•Teamwork: Must work closely with engineers, electricians, and technicians.
