PURPOSE:
This position will drive change in behaviors toward Health and Safety to promote a world class safety culture. The Health and Safety Leader will actively lead and participate in the execution of the plant’s safety initiatives and maintain compliance with Federal, State and local regulations, corporate policies and standards, and customer requirements. This position will oversee permitted work activities, PERT team, Confined Space Rescue Team, and reports to the HSE Manager.
KEY OBJECTIVES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Aligns Occupational Health and Workplace Safety processes with business goals and engages employees to promote behaviors that will achieve zero harm.
- Serves as Subject Matter Expert (SME) regarding federal, state, and local regulations.
- Creates and maintains proactive measures to identify hazards and regulatory non-compliance for identifying trends or opportunities to reduce incidents and injuries.
- Leads Continuous Improvement ideas regarding safety conditions, policies, and procedures.
- Provide and promote mandated training established by regulatory agencies including respirator fit-testing and hands-on fire extinguisher training.
- Maintain and communicate yearly training schedule.
- Audit mandated HSE training attendance.
- Calibrate and maintain gas monitors used in the safety department.
- Test and document the operations of Lab hoods and welding ventilation devices.
- Supervise the inspection and maintenance of all emergency response equipment and plant fire extinguishers.
- Evaluate all confined space and hot work activities and issue permits when applicable.
- Participate in safety reviews and audits.
- Participate in Unit Turnaround activities.
- Audit for correct completion of all safe work, hot work, confined space PTA, and JSA.
- Participate in emergency response activities.
- Perform required reviews and updates on plant procedures.
- Conduct and participate in Operator/New Hire Training.
- Operational support during emergencies or abnormal operations.
- Audit all startup/shutdown procedures for signoff of each step/report.
- Review Operational impacts on MOC and participate in MOC meetings.
- Participate in PHA revalidations when required.
- Participate in incident investigations.
- Coordinate equipment operator training.
- Assist in Emergency Response and Fire Brigade training.
- Act as on call EH&S representative and serve as a back-up to other EH&S department employees.
- Interact with Plant Security.
- Conduct plant safety tours.
- Be an active member of the facility confined space/ high level rescue team.
- Be a member of the mutual aid group established with Sonneborn
- Minimum High School Diploma or GED is required.
- Ability to work on multiple projects and follow assigned projects to completion in a timely manner.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills/interpersonal interactions, speaker and presentation skills.
- Ability to maintain, update, and research training materials.
- Ability to perform daily duties within the manufacturing environment, including climbing tanks and towers.
- Ability to perform duties as part of the facility Emergency Response Team.
- Willingness to be “on call” status for off-shift and weekend callouts.
- Proficiency in use of MS Office software.
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety.
- Five to ten years of industry experience, prior refining environment.
- Ability to enter work orders and requisitions in JDE.
