The
Electrical Substation Foremanperforms advanced, highly skilled electrical work in the construction, maintenance, operation, and repair of substations. Safety should be the number one priority of any crew leader as he is entrusted with the safety of each employee that he directly supervises. An employee in this class may work under the general supervision of a Superintendent, be classed as a Superintendent/Alt., and/or client Inspector. This position reports to General Foreman / District Manager.
Roles And Responsibilities
- Assembly and Erection of Substations.
- Responsible for ensuring safety standards for his crew and working closely with the safety team and operational management to set standards and guidelines to create a safety program for all employees.
- Work in hazardous conditions of working closely to energized equipment in substations are extremely critical factors of this job.
- Taking lead on new Job briefings when the scope of work changes.
- Responsible for daily job briefings and ensuring that all crew members are well versed on the coming day’s business, so they are prepared for any and all potential hazards.
- Assesses and adjusts priorities and refocus efforts as needed to meet individual project requirements, workload,
- Provides a framework of various levels of training and experience to be used when recruiting staff.
- Responsible to recognize areas for potential improvement and to report any “near miss” events in order for the crew members to learn from those events with the goal of preventing future accidents.
- The supervision of Substation Electricians, and/or, Lineman, and other assigned crew in the performance of each substation construction project per scope of work The Substation Foreman is responsible for managing and directing the activities of all Substation Electricians, Lineman, Groundman, and is expected to exercise considerable initiative and independent judgment to ensure that the quality and quantity of work performed is in compliance with applicable safety standards and operating policies.
- Conducts project review and planning with Project Manager/Superintendent.
- Reviews schematics and specifications; ensures drawings and specifications will function as designed in environment intended for use.
- Provides material takeoffs.
- Maintains inventory usage and materials used on jobs.
- Coordinates or prepares shipment of materials and supplies for job sites.
- Installs system components and wiring in compliance with the Company standards, Client Contract Standards.
- Propose changes or modifications to plans to enhance operation.
- Schedules critical and non-critical activities effectively for project success.
- Managing and schedules assigned staff.
- Conducts and records daily tailgate/toolbox/safety meetings.
- Responsible for upkeep and safekeep of all equipment and tools assigned for substation construction.
- Responsible for training assigned staff in the installation of substation material and equipment.
- Responsible for training assigned staff in proper usage and safety on all equipment and tools.
- Develop goals and priorities; assign tasks and projects.
- Planning and initiating projects.
- Establish production goals
- Establishing and implementing OSHA and Customer Safety Requirements.
- Building and updated detailed man-loaded construction schedules.
- Possess knowledge of Electrical theory, National Electric Code, and National Electric Safety Code, methods, materials, and equipment used in the electrical trade, and the occupational hazards and safety precautions and procedures related to working around high voltages (69kV – 500kV).
- Basic electricity and the application of electrical theory used in the design of substations; the installation, maintenance, repair, and operation of all types of electrical and mechanical equipment used in substations; electrical systems, circuits, and control logic with the ability to locate and isolate problems working from blueprints, wiring diagrams, and schematic drawings; mechanical operation of a substation; the theory of all substation equipment including electrical, mechanical, and control equipment.
- Experience with using various electrical test equipment and instruments such as: volt meters, grounds, hot sticks.
- Must be able to lift up to 75-100lbs.
- Must be able to stand/walk for long periods.
- Must be able to see and hear to avoid workplace dangers.
- Must be able to bend, stoop, or lift on a regular basis. Must have ability for frequent travel on needed training requirements and potential for overtime including storm work.
- Work is strenuous and requires bending, stooping, and heavy lifting.
- High School Diploma or equivalent and/or Apprenticeship preferred but not required.
- Five to 10 (5-10) years of industry experience
- Three plus (3+) of Foreman Experience- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid State of Residence Driver License is required.
- Candidates must pass criminal and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) background checks and pass a pre-employment drug screen.
- Must have ability for frequent travel on needed training requirements and potential for overtime including storm work.
