Job Title: Fitter/Fabricator – Class A Trainer
Position Summary:
The Fitter/Fabricator Class A Trainer will be directly responsible for providing hands-on training and leadership within our structural steel fabrication shop. This dual-role position requires expert-level fabrication skills and the ability to mentor less experienced team members. When not actively engaged in training activities, the Trainer will work as a fully productive member of the fabrication team, contributing to the completion of structural steel projects in a fast-paced production environment.
Key Responsibilities:
•Perform advanced-level fitting and fabrication of structural steel components including beams, columns, trusses, and complex assemblies from shop drawings and blueprints.
•Provide on-the-job training, coaching, and skills development for Class B and C Fitters, Apprentices, and new hires.
•Lead by example in all aspects of shop safety, work ethic, quality, and production standards.
•Actively participate in the production workflow, including layout, fitting, and tacking of steel structures, when not conducting training duties.
•Assist in developing standardized work procedures, training materials, and performance evaluation tools.
•Monitor the progress of trainees and provide feedback to supervision and QA/QC on readiness for advancement.
•Ensure all work, both instructional and production, meets or exceeds industry standards including AWS D1.1 and AISC specifications.
•Operate and instruct others in the safe use of fabrication equipment including overhead cranes, torches, grinders, and measuring tools.
•Collaborate with supervisors, engineers, and quality control personnel to resolve fitting issues and improve shop performance.
•Maintain an organized, clean, and safe work area at all times.
Qualifications:
•Minimum 7+ years of structural steel fabrication experience.
•Trainer, lead, or mentoring role strongly preferred.
•Mastery in reading and interpreting complex blueprints, welding symbols, and fabrication instructions.
•In-depth knowledge of layout, fitting, and tacking techniques for structural steel.
•Familiarity with AWS D1.1 welding code and AISC fabrication standards.
•Proven ability to communicate effectively and train others in a hands-on environment.
•Physically fit to lift up to 50 lbs. and work in an active shop environment.
•High school diploma or GED required; vocational/technical training or journeyman certification is a plus.
Preferred Certifications:
•AWS Certified Welder (Structural)
•OSHA 10 or 30 Certification
•Forklift and Overhead Crane Certification
