Role Synopsis

The Field Environmental Specialist will assist the business to safely and responsibly produce hydrocarbons as the field-based interface advising on the delivery of environmental policies and procedures to meet regulatory and bpx requirements. The position will coordinate, complete, and supervise regulatory required compliance activities to ensure life-of-the-well environmental regulatory compliance with federal, state and local rules and regulations. The ideal candidate will demonstrate proven success in a multifaceted, fast paced environment and show critical thinking, innovation, and agility in completing multiple, sophisticated initiatives. This role will report to the Field Environmental Lead and work with the central environmental team, field HSE team, and field operations personnel.


Key Accountabilities

Provide day-to-day field environmental support and mentorship to business unit to ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations while maintaining conformance with BPX corporate requirements.

Evaluate business activity set to settle environmental risk profile for both BPX and Contractor activity.

Work with Engineering to conduct gas and liquid release calculations while working with field personnel, and prepare appropriate notifications to internal management and regulatory agencies when warranted.

Work well with local, state, and federal regulators for inspections, flood permit applications, release notifications and remediation progress, etc..

Knowledgeable in oil/produced water/chemical spill remediation methods and able to coordinate various work crews involved in the process (sampling, excavation/tilling/treating, backfilling).

Ensure compliance with SPCC/SPC requirements and assist with spill response and remediation activities. This often includes working with the EPA, NRC, TCEQ/LDEQ, RRC/DNR, local county & parish emergency planning commissions.

Provide day-to-day technical support on waste tracking and waste management (field questions and issues from facility personnel regarding proper waste management).

Schedule and review air emissions test reports for engines and combustors.

Conduct and document gas leak surveys with a FLIR camera (while managing contractors performing similar surveys), and generate work orders for any vital repairs.

Aid the Environmental Engineers in support of air, water and waste permitting and compliance programs. This may include, but is not limited to:


Conduct site visits to inventory or verify air emission sources on each location

Assist with data collection, document review and preparation for internal reports and SWPPPs, SPCCs, SPCs and SARA Tier II plans, Greenhouse Gas reports and filings.

Develop, implement and assure waste management and water use tracking and reporting.


Attend and support regulatory compliance audits.

Support PSCM-requested audits like new saltwater disposal wells, waste disposal facilities, etc.

Lead environmental initiatives and participate in deploying programs on key environmental matters.

Prepare and lead environmental training sessions (in conjunction with Environmental Engineers).

Identify, assess and advise on environmental and compliance risk reduction measures, supporting the investigation of environmental incidents, sharing learnings and implementing corrective actions.


Perform other work-related tasks as assigned.


Essential Education


B.S. with environmental emphasis


Essential Experience

Minimum +5 years’ field based environmental experience in the upstream oil and gas industry.

Experience with all aspects of oil and gas gathering, processing, treatment, compression, pumping, and storage including produced water gathering and disposal.

General understanding of CWA, RCRA, SPCC/FRP, EPCRA, CERCLA, UIC, CAA, MBTA, ESA, TSCA and related interpretation, research, regulatory liaison and reporting requirements.

Solid understanding of federal (EPA, BLM), state (Texas and Louisiana), and local environmental rules and regulations.

Familiar with engineering calculation methods for liquid and gas releases.

Eager personality with a strong sense of initiative, motivation, and drive.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills which include the ability to speak, write and listen in a manner that clarifies issues, promotes closure and delivers information in a clear and concise manner.


Proactive in planning ahead and problem solving.

Successful working independently and as a team player with the ability to build and maintain effective relationships with regulatory agency staff and all levels of company office and field staff.

Ability to travel and stay on site as needed to ensure successful project delivery.

After-hours emergency response visits will periodically be required in this role


Valid driver’s license


Additional Information

This is a field-based position with primary field offices in Shreveport, LA and Lufkin, TX. Expected routine work schedule is 4 10-hr days per week and available for emergency environmental callouts.


Desirable Criteria

Experience reviewing and implementing SPCC/SPC, waste management, noise mitigation, and other environmental protection plans

FLIR OGI certification, or certified thermographer, with experience in oil & gas leak inspection programs


Experience working with field based regulatory agencies

- Note that the pay range listed for this position is a good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible base compensation at the time of posting.

Up to 75% travel should be expected with this role
