The Opportunity:

Tetra Tech requires a full-time Field Director/Staff Archaeologist to support cultural resource management (CRM) projects across the Pacific Northwest, including Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. This role includes supervising field crews, leading surveys and excavations, and contributing to technical reporting in compliance with Section 106 of the NHPA and applicable state regulations. Candidates should have experience with the archaeology of the Pacific Northwest, including knowledge of local Tribes, cultural landscapes, and site types.

Your Role:

Lead or support archaeological survey, testing, monitoring, and data recovery fieldwork in remote and urban settings.
Supervise and mentor archaeological field technicians, ensuring proper field methods and documentation.
Prepare or contribute to site forms, technical reports, and agency correspondence.
Ensure regulatory compliance with Section 106, NEPA, and applicable state historic preservation laws.
Coordinate with clients, Tribal representatives, agency personnel, and internal teams.
Manage logistics for field projects including data collection, vehicles, equipment, and safety.
Ensure the safety and well-being of all team members during field operations.
Process artifacts and contribute to analysis, cataloging, and curation preparation.
Support GIS and mapping needs using GPS or mobile data collection tools (e.g., ESRI Field Maps).
Maintain high-quality field data and notes with accuracy and attention to detail.
Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, legislation, and industry standards.
Pursue continuous professional development and maintain a high degree of discipline, knowledge and awareness.
Work in a safe manner at all times and report all health and safety incidents and concerns.
Additional duties as required.



Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field at minimum; Master’s degree preferred for Field Director roles.
At least 3 years of professional CRM field experience, including in-field supervisory experience.
Familiarity with the archaeology, history, and cultures of the Pacific Northwest.
Ability to meet physical demands of fieldwork in variable weather and terrain.
Knowledge of federal and state cultural resource laws and processes (e.g., NHPA, ARPA, SEPA).
Excellent communication, writing, and organizational skills.
Must possess a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record without restrictions.



Preferred Qualifications:

Meets Secretary of the Interior Professional Qualification Standards in Archaeology.
Meets Oregon Qualified Archaeologist requirements.
Prior experience with Pacific Northwest archaeology, Tribes, and Tribal consultation.
Proficiency in ArcGIS, GPS units, digital data collection (e.g., Survey123, Field Maps).
Experience with reporting for federal agencies such as the BLM, USFS, FHWA, or USACE.
Experience with reporting for state agencies, such as Oregon EFSC and Washington EFSEC, and for County Conditional Use Permits.
First Aid/CPR or field safety certifications.



Work Environment:

The role involves outdoor work, including prolonged walking or standing on various terrains and in a wide range of weather conditions.
Physical activities such as bending, kneeling, standing, and lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 35 lbs. are required.

Compensation:


Pay commensurate with experience.


Pay Range: $70,000-$85,000 Yearly


Pay Range - There are multiple factors that are considered in determining final pay for a position, including, but not limited to, relevant work experience and demonstrated work experience in the above role; skills, certifications, and competencies that align to the specified role; geographic location; and education, as well as contract provisions regarding labor categories that are specific to the position.
