Under minimal supervision and oversight, the Environmental Technician is responsible for the performance of environmental inspections, data management, and reporting requirements to comply with environmental compliance programs, permit requirements, and corporate environmental policies, standards, procedures and strategic environmental goals within their assigned region, plant and project scope. The Environmental Technician will provide environmental compliance field support during and after construction for a variety of construction project types. Responsibilities include performance of inspections, collection of data, and the development of reports to demonstrate compliance with applicable requirements at multiple AEP assets within the assigned region within regulatory time frames. In collaboration with environmental support staff, the Environmental Technician will advise and train construction field personnel on applicable environmental regulations and permit requirements. The Environmental Technician is also responsible for informing appropriate AEP staff of issues identified during inspections or field observations that must be addressed through internal business processes.
The Environmental Technician should have a working knowledge of some the following environmental programs:
Key competencies of this position are technical expertise, planning and organization ability, attention to detail, written and oral communication skills and initiative.
Education: High School diploma or preferred associate or bachelor's degree in an environmental, science, or related discipline. Previous military experience will be considered to meet the associate degree requirement.
Experience: Minimum of three years of experience with an associate degree. At least one year of experience with a bachelor’s degree. Minimum of five years of experience with a high school diploma.
Physical demand is considered light duty. However, the role does include walking for long distances and assignment may include walking in rough or steep terrain depending on the assigned region.
These are additional expectations for the job and could include specific work experience, preferred education or certifications, pre-employment testing, expectations about travel, shift work, etc.
Must have working knowledge of, and adequate demonstrated competence in some of the programs listed in the job summary above.
Travel time is considered 90% within the assigned region and may include overnight stays on occasion.
The Physical Demand Level for this job is: S – Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally (Occasionally: activity or condition exists up to 1/3 of the time) and/or a negligible amount of force frequently. (Frequently: activity or condition exists from 1/3 to 2/3 of the time) to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.
