ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNICIAN (WCT)
The Environmental Technician (WCT) performs a variety of technical duties related to the water quality analysis of drinking water. The WCT will be responsible for acquiring water samples to comply with county, state and federal water quality regulations.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
•Coordinate water sampling activities pursuant to county, state and federal regulations for Global Water Resources (GWR) drinking water systems. Organize and perform sampling events to sample various water production and distribution systems to verify process performance.
•Follow Standard Operating Procedures and Sampling Plans to ensure proper collection and sampling techniques. Follow contracted laboratory’s recommendations for sampling to ensure the quantity and preservation of samples are properly handled and identified when submitted to the lab for analysis.
•Operate a variety of laboratory and field analysis equipment, pH & temperature meters, turbidimeters, colorimeters, etc. Maintain and verify calibration certifications of laboratory and field equipment and the associated appurtenances. Prepare solutions and reagents for various chemical analysis as necessary. Proficient with MS Office Products – excel, word, etc.
•Investigate water quality customer complaints when applicable, schedule site visit, gather samples, conduct field tests, analyze and report results, coordinate remedial action when needed.
•Reviews and accurately logs data into appropriate tracking mechanisms for compliance, process control and engineering projects. Must be able to interpret the data and alert management of trends.
•Maintain sampling quality assurance/quality control records (chain of custody forms, field equipment verification logbooks, and laboratory workbooks), data calculation history. Upload data into a Laboratory Information Management System database. Prepares water sampling plans and compliance reports. Reviews and revises SOP’s related to the WCT sampling protocol. Updates compliance matrix spreadsheets and provides updates to the environmental water quality supervisor.
•Assist in the development and changes of site sampling plans for regulatory requirements.
•Conduct and coordinate water quality bacteriological sampling of new distribution water main lines with engineering staff to ensure no bacteriological contamination of the potable water system occurs.
•Conducts research and keeps current on drinking water regulations and sampling requirements to verify monitoring and sampling protocol complies with all county, state and federal regulations.
•Maintain records of the vehicle used for sampling; monitor fuel, lubricant fluid levels; tire pressure, windshield and wiper blades, dashboard alarms, report all necessary repairs to maintenance staff.
•Ability to adapt to changes in sampling schedules as necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of water quality sampling and analysis experience, education, specialized training, ADEQ water treatment and or water distribution certifications will qualify an applicant for this position.
•Two years of experience in either water sampling, water treatment, water distribution or laboratory water analysis experience.
•High school graduation with supplemental college courses or specialized training in chemistry, bacteriology, biology or a related field. Proficient in MS Office Suite – excel and word.
•Strong analytical and good communication skills and attention to details.
•Valid Arizona driver’s license and clean driving record.
•Requires possession of, or ability to obtain a Grade I Water Distribution System Operator’s Certification from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) within six months of hire.
•Basic knowledge of drinking water standards and the ability to navigate through drinking water regulations in the 40 CFR 141.
•Must act in a respectful, knowledgeable and professional manner. Work requires regular interaction involving exchange and receipt of complex information. Will interact with employees at all levels and will represent the company externally.

Physical Demands: Sitting for extended periods; prolonged periods of time with repetitive motions of hands and fingers; close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus; climb stairs, navigate uneven terrain; use fingers to grasp and move small objects; ability to hear and recognize sounds; able to react quickly using hands, fingers, or feet; able to utilize personal protective equipment as appropriate for safety. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to thirty pounds. Work is performed in an office and outdoors where the employee may be exposed to noise from construction site heavy equipment and inclement weather.
