Job Summary

The Natural Resources Permitting intern will support the work of the NiSource Natural Resources Permitting department, which is responsible for driving environmental compliance across NiSource. The intern will receive hands on experience in environmental regulations and the regulatory process and its impact on utility business operations. Responsibilities include applying regulatory knowledge to project review to ensure environmental compliance, coordinating with business partners to reduce environmental risk, and summarizing complex requirements to a variety of audiences. The intern will report to the Team Leader, Natural Resources Permitting, and collaborate with the Natural Resources Permitting Team and other internal business partners. Successful candidate must be capable of working virtually and in the office.

This position follows a hybrid schedule, requiring on-site presence three days per week and remote work two days per week.

Essential Functions

- Analyze and interpret environmental related rules, regulations, policies, and guidelines as necessary to ensure construction activities attain 100% environmental compliance.

- Coordinate with affected business partners to align operational needs and constraints with efficient and effective environmental risk minimization and mitigation.

- Perform required environmental activities necessary to ensure environmental programs and permits are properly implemented; prepare written summaries of environmental permits and regulations and their impact on business operations.

- Promote continuous improvement around environmental compliance within the organization through process enhancement, training, and collaboration.

Required Qualifications For Position

- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)

- Strong writing, proofreading and organizational skills

- Provides clear, concise, and effective communication with peers and business partners

- High performance individual eager to learn and ready to take ownership of assigned duties

- Demonstrated ability to work independently and cooperatively on teams

Preferred Additional Qualifications for Position

- Enrolled in a college or university with a focus in science, natural resources, environmental science or a related field.

- Knowledge of environmental regulations related to the energy industry.

Salary Range*:

$17.20 - $29.70

- The salary offered to a candidate is based on several factors including but not limited to the candidate’s skills, job-related knowledge, and relevant experience, as well as internal pay equity.
