The Environmental Health & Safety Specialist has a pivotal role within the business to drive and embed Environmental, Health & Safety into the culture of the organization. This includes supporting site EHS efforts in Oregon OSHA regulatory compliance, injury prevention, environmental affairs, and environmentally sustainable projects. The EHS Specialist is responsible for supporting all environmental, health, and safety programs, procedures, training, work practices, and controls are effectively implemented for the company.
This position will work within the production environment to ensure that Benchmade Knife Company Inc. complies with federal, state, and local regulations. The successful candidate will support all EHS activities to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations. They will help lead EHS technical and tactical projects to ensure Benchmade conducts its operations in full compliance.
The desired candidate must be highly motivated and have interpersonal skills and a professional level of written and verbal communication skills. The EHS Specialist must be able to respond appropriately to non-compliance situations and anticipate problems before they occur.
- Interprets and communicates environmental, health & safety standards impacting the company. Assists the EHS Manager in developing, implementing, and maintaining all programs designed to minimize business risks.
- Supports area supervisors and managers with incident investigations, reporting, and follow-up with involved departments and Human Resources. Initiates follow-up action and communication; maintains appropriate files and records following regulatory record retention requirements.
- Safety Programs - Active in leading the Safety Committee, emergency response, and other related meetings. Assists in facilitating the company's safety programs in a manner consistent with established requirements and external standards. Promotes employee safety awareness through the development, implementation, and administration of a variety of training, incentive, and communication programs.
- Health Programs - Assists in providing first aid and/or treatment for work-related injuries/illnesses, health maintenance/medical surveillance, and other EHS services for company employees. Supports the overall success of industrial hygiene programs. Maintains detailed and organized related records.
- Environmental Programs - Supporting compliance with County, State, and Federal environmental-related approvals, permits, plans, registrations, and routine or periodic reporting.
- Regulation Compliance – Support regulatory compliance with external safety, and health, such as OSHA, D.O.T., OR-DEQ, EPA, through assessment and inspection; monitoring, compiling, and analyzing relevant test data; meeting reporting and permit requirements of relevant agencies; and working closely with personnel to identify problems, develop and implement solutions.
- Develops, coordinates, and ensures implementation of Emergency Response and Disaster Planning Programs
- Reviews, creates, and oversees the accuracy of SDS and safety-related language on product labels to ensure content and warnings comply with applicable regulations.
- Prepare, deliver, and/or coordinate training events for all employees and assist in maintaining a training matrix.
- Assists in the planning and execution of all required response drills and exercises for Benchmade Knife Company, Inc.
- Conducts inspections and audits as needed
- An associate's degree in environmental science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, EH&S Management, or another related degree, and 1-3 years of experience supporting or implementing safety programs in an industrial setting is desired. Equivalency to the qualification standard will also be considered.
- Must be knowledgeable of OSHA, D.O.T, OR-DEQ, EPA, and V.O.C. related regulations.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written) with a wide variety of audiences (production, management, administrative, etc.).
- Demonstrated proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office products, primarily the use of Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and Excel.
- Demonstrated ability to influence by example and the ability to work with all levels of the organization. Ability to develop and make presentations before various audience sizes at all levels of the organization.
- Ability to work independently and make appropriate decisions regarding work methods and priorities while maintaining the high confidentiality necessary for personnel work required.
- Ability to effectively coordinate multiple work projects, adapt to changing priorities, and meet set deadlines
- Excellent customer service skills; friendly and approachable required
- Attention to detail and strong organizational and analytical skills required
- Ability to interpret and apply company policies and procedures in making work decisions or in providing information to others
- EHS Certification preferred.
