EPCOR Water Services is hiring a full-time temporary Engineering Technologist to join our Wastewater Collection (WWC) team. This position is based at our Aurum site near Edmonton, AB, and is expected to last up to 11 months.

In the Engineering Technologist role, you will be responsible for delivering technical support to EPCOR’s Linear Asset Operations team. This position plays a key role in leading the execution of moderately complex to multi-year operational and capital programs, including initiatives such as catch basin and maintenance hole repairs, high-pressure flushing, overland drainage management, inspection programs, and ditch and culvert maintenance.

You will also be relied upon to provide timely technical input for customer legal claims, callbacks, and complaints, as well as support design reviews and respond to access to information requests. Additionally, this role supports urgent and emergency technical needs as they arise within Wastewater Collection (WWC) Operations, ensuring that operational continuity and service quality are maintained.

What you’d be responsible for

Engineering Technologist – Key Responsibilities (however, not limited to)

•

Report to the Manager, Program Planning & Coordination and support the development and implementation of WWC operations and maintenance programs.

•

Prepare work requests and work orders, review inspection reports, and identify appropriate actions for WWC facilities, including sewers, maintenance holes, pump stations, control structures, and stormwater systems.

•

Support asset condition assessments and capital investment planning by:

+ Optimizing CMMS configurations + Enhancing data collection and analysis + Contributing to continuous improvement initiatives

•

Coordinate moderately complex to large-scale operational and capital programs/projects, including:

+ Securing permits and legal authorizations + Supporting procurement and contractor management + Ensuring safety compliance + Tracking project scope, progress, and costs

•

Assist in the development and refinement of engineering standards, operational procedures, and rehabilitation priorities.

•

Represent EPCOR during the review of external design submissions to ensure alignment with standards and protection of existing infrastructure.

•

Plan and coordinate bypass operations and the commissioning of new or upgraded assets, including CCC/FAC processes with developers and inspectors.

•

Act as the operational representative on major capital projects, managing operational input during design, construction, commissioning, and handover.

•

Respond to internal and external inquiries related to the collection system, including:

+ Customer complaints and service requests + Legal claims, litigation, and third-party recoveries + Requests from City departments, consultants, and contractors

•

Assess structural and operational conditions during evaluations, initiate follow-up actions, and recommend or escalate repair needs as appropriate.

•

Demonstrate a strong commitment to health, safety, and environmental standards in all work activities.

What’s required to be successful

To be successful in this role, you will possess the following:

Education and Certification

•

Completion of a two-year diploma in an Engineering Technology program from a recognized post-secondary institution.

+ Preferred disciplines include Mechanical, Chemical, Environmental/Civil, or Electrical/Controls Engineering Technology.

•

Certification as a Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) in good standing with ASET is considered an asset.

•

WWC Level 1 or higher certification is also considered an asset.

Experience

•

A minimum of seven (7) years of experience in a technical role.

+ Candidates with at least five (5) years of relevant experience may be considered for a developmental-level appointment.

•

Industry experience in water, wastewater, or other sectors with transferable skills to wastewater collection utilities.

•

Proven project management experience, including:

+ Procurement processes + Contractor and safety management + Progress, scope, and cost tracking/forecasting

•

Experience working in an operating environment with Level 3 or 4 Wastewater Collection Systems is considered an asset.

Technical Knowledge and Skills

•

Strong understanding of:

+ ISO systems and HSE-related ISO compliance (specific to EPCOR WWC) + Mechanical equipment, gravity and pressure flow systems, hydrology, stormwater overland flow, and PLC-controlled systems

•

Proficiency in reading and interpreting complex design plans, specifications, and technical charts.

•

Ability to gather and analyze process operating data for optimization and design purposes.

•

Advanced computer skills, including:

+ Microsoft Office Suite and SharePoint + Familiarity with database systems and business finance reporting tools

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

•

Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with Professional Engineers, Technologists, and a wide range of stakeholders.

•

Demonstrated customer service orientation and ability to maintain positive relationships with the public, contractors, consultants, and internal teams.

Licensing and Driving Requirements

•

Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License.

•

Ability to qualify for and maintain an EPCOR driver’s permit.

•

A 5-year commercial driver’s abstract may be required (must have 6 or fewer demerits).

Additional Assets

•

NASCCO PACP, MACP, and LACP certifications.

•

Experience with:

+ IVARA or other CMMS systems + ESRI GIS systems + ProjectWise or similar drawing/document management software

Classification: T3

Hours of Work: 80 hours bi-weekly

Wage: starting at $51.89 per hour

The final wage and step placement will be determined at the time of selection, based on a combination of factors as outlined in the Collective Agreement.

•

Candidates appointed at the developmental level will have their starting wage determined based on relevant experience at the time of selection.
