The ideal candidate would have the ability to read, understand, and interpret multi-discipline engineering plans, drawings, specifications, and other technical documents; be able to prepare engineering design drawings for a large public utility using AutoCAD, and be familiar with Civil Engineering terminology and drafting practices; have the ability to effectively communicate complex technical ideas to non-technical personnel, both verbally and in writing; and have the ability to work effectively under tight deadlines on critical projects and systems within a team environment.

INTRODUCTION: Human Resources will screen applications and supplemental questionnaires. Candidates possessing the strongest skills and experience for this position will be forwarded to the hiring department for further evaluation and to determine who will be invited to the formal interview process. The successful candidate may be required to pass a job-related physical evaluation.


GENERAL PURPOSE

Under general supervision, performs technical engineering support duties in support of a variety of engineering design, construction and maintenance engineering activities; and performs related duties as assigned.


DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


Knowledge of:

Basic practices and methods of engineering design and construction applicable to a large complex potable water utility; engineering mathematics, including algebra, geometry and trigonometry; terminology, methods, practices, techniques and nomenclature of civil, mechanical and/or electrical engineering drafting; uses and operations of AutoCAD and other applicable software; GPS data capture methods and techniques; basic design and operations of the District's distribution and transmission systems; applicable District operating policies and departmental work procedures and quality standards; legal and regulatory requirements applicable to water works engineering.


Ability to:

Perform technical engineering design analyses and calculations and reach sound accurate conclusions; read, understand and interpret engineering plans, drawings, specifications, maps and other technical materials applicable to the work; prepare engineering designs and drawings of moderate difficulty and complexity in AutoCAD; operate and use a variety of field test and data collection equipment to obtain highly accurate data; utilize GIS and other engineering/facilities databases to obtain information required for the work; precisely follow written and oral instructions; perform highly detailed work thoroughly, neatly and accurately; develop and maintain effective working relationships with District staff, consulting engineers, representatives of other agencies and others encountered in the course of work.


Training and Experience:

A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent, supplemented by college-level course work in engineering technology, drafting, engineering mathematics or related fields; and three years of progressively responsible engineering drafting or field survey experience, at least one year of which was in performing engineering design work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.


Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:

Some positions may require a Nevada driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District’s Vehicle Insurance Policy.

Some positions may require the ability to obtain a Water Distribution Operator Grade I certificate issued by the State of Nevada.
