The Operations Engineer is responsible for establishing a high standard of service to all customers by
maintaining and improving the reliability of the electrical distribution system within the service area, and for
the utilization of sound engineering practices to determine the most efficient, cost-effective engineering
Work with assigned Account Managers, Customer Experience, System Service, large commercial and
industrial accounts, along with residential customers to address issues and needs to help resolve
customer complaints. Assist with claim investigations as needed. Respond to customer complaints filed
with the Florida Public Service Commission and all other customer complaints in allotted timeframe.
Ensure the existing electrical distribution system meets the Tampa Electric operating standards and Safe
Ensure that future electrical system expansion will accommodate load growth by: communicating with
System Planning about future development and load additions, having direct involvement in major load
additions and projects of unusual nature such as relay service, cogeneration, etc., monitoring the service
area construction program, meeting with customers, developers, architects, engineers, contractors,
electricians, other utilities, governmental agencies and other TEC departments for job planning and
Maintain circuit protection/coordination within the service area by: reviewing coordination of each
circuit as suggested by System Reliability, coordinating new circuits & circuits that change configurations,
monitoring OCR performance and implementing circuit corrective action as appropriate; providing fusing
analysis and recommendations to the field technicians as needed.
Maintain service area VAR flow levels. Optimize load balancing on circuits as needed.
Provide technical assistance to System Service, Substation Operations & CSA line department.
Communicate circuit priorities for the Firm Load Curtailment and Energy Delivery System Restoration
Maintain system reliability through installations of reliability equipment (ACR and Trip Savers). Perform
Key Internal: ED management, all Energy Delivery departments within the Company and various other
Key External: Customers, developers, contractors, architects, engineers, electricians, other utilities,
Required: Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited university
Preferred: Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited university.
Required: Florida State driver’s license; Distribution Safety Course to open energized equipment
Scope of Position: Will work with more seasoned Engineer in performing more complex aspects of the job.
Performs routine engineering work requiring application of standard techniques, procedures and criteria in
carrying out a sequence of related engineering tasks; receives close supervision on new aspects of nonroutine assignments; using prescribed methods, performs specific and limited portions of a broader
assignment of an experienced engineer; may have minor responsibility for training, orientation or assigning
of work to other employees; may schedule/coordinate projects with supervision and review; prepare
engineering analyses, write specifications and reports as directed.
Required: Minimum of eighteen months of related Engineering work experience, or 12 months with
Fundamental Engineer (FE) Exam; Must have experience successfully functioning within the

years of direct experience in Operations Distribution Engineering; Must have experience

Required: Sustained demonstrated sound knowledge in the engineering field with an expected or
higher degree of performance; Must have demonstrated the ability to complete highly
technical, complex assignments and designs with minimal direction.
