About the job
The Junior Electrical Engineer/Specialist provides support for the engineering team in the development, design, review, and implementation of our suite of energy solutions. From Battery Storage to Solar PV to customized Power Conditioning systems, the engineering team is responsible for all aspects of each project, from design, site supervision, permit submission, compliance assurance and incentive management. The successful candidate will report to the senior lead engineer and will assist in all aspects of projects.
Accountabilities:
•Performs engineering work in the design and implementation of offered power systems solutions, including drafting, designing and having technical meetings with vendors.
•Creates proposals and presents them to the clients’ technical team.
•Creates drawing sets used for permitting and construction including but not limited to Request for Proposals (RFP), ESA packages, Issued for Construction (IFC) and As-Builts.
•Assist in preparation of engineering simulations and drawings.
•Participate in intercompany brainstorming sessions to propose alternatives to technical teams across the sister organizations.
•Work with Project Manager to develop and coordinate project schedules to ensure timely project completion.
•Attend and participate in project team, client and contractor meetings.
•Visit project sites for inspection, supervision and perform testing and commissioning activities.
•Assist in knowledge management by maintaining active knowledge of codes, standards and product availability, and sharing knowledge with other members of the engineering department.
Skills and Experience
•Three years+ of relevant electrical engineering and design experience
•Ability to read and understand electrical, mechanical, civil and/or architectural drawings
•In-depth knowledge and understanding of applicable electrical power systems
•Autonomous, detail oriented and takes initiative
•Professional Engineer or EIT designation is a plus
•Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
•Ability to multi-task and manage numerous projects simultaneously, with minimal supervision.
•Knowledge of applicable technical codes and standards (OESC, CSA, IEEE, OBC, NFPA, etc)
•Experience or knowledge with designing grounding and bonding systems as per IEEE, CSA or NEC codes
•Experience or proficiency with comprehension of detailed C&I SLD drawings
•Proficiency with power flow, arc flash, short circuit and fault currents studies considered an asset.
•Knowledge of Power Quality parameters and their impact on electrical systems
•Knowledge of switchgear design and the applicable standards.
•Proficient in designing projects using AutoCAD or related CAD software.
•Proficient in ETAP or similar Electrical System Design software
•Familiarity with Industrial, commercial, and utility-scale solar PV system design and layout
•Experience with PV system modeling tools (e.g., Helioscope, PVSyst, or SAM)
•Understanding of string sizing, inverter selection, and shading analysis
•Knowledge of interconnection requirements and utility coordination for grid-tied systems
•Understanding of solar PV codes and standards (e.g., CSA C22.1, NEC Article 690, IEEE 1547)
•Experience with preparing single-line diagrams, layout drawings, and permit submission packages for PV projects
•Familiarity with the integration of solar PV systems with energy storage and microgrid applications
•Understanding of structural and electrical considerations in rooftop, ground-mount, and carport PV installations
•Ability to evaluate solar PV performance data and assist with commissioning and troubleshooting activities
•Experience supporting incentive applications and solar rebate programs
•Experience performing detailed cable sizing calculations based on load, voltage drop, derating factors, and short-circuit withstand requirements
•Experience calculating fault current levels and thermal damage thresholds to inform protective device coordination and cable sizing
•Knowledge of insulation types, cable construction, and their influence on thermal and electrical performance
•Skilled in producing and reviewing cable schedules, routing plans, and termination diagrams
•Ability to ensure cable designs meet both technical requirements and cost-effectiveness while
Education
•Bachelor's or Master’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited University.
•Continuing education or training courses in relevant subjects strongly encouraged.
