The Lansing Board of Water & Light has openings for a

Transmission Planner Electrical Engineer III - V

with our Electric Systems Integrity Department located in Lansing, MI.

Job Type: Full-Time Starting Salary Range: EE-III $91,746. - $111,930.; EE-IV $101,876.; EE-V $113,246 - $140,425. Position Summary:

Responsible for engineering activities related to planning, designing, constructing, operating, maintaining, and ensuring regulatory compliance of the electric transmission and distribution systems. Most projects will involve some or all the following activities: investigations, studies, estimating, economic evaluations, budgeting, scheduling, system protection, designing, drawing development and review, construction and commissioning support, training, and project management.

This engineering position will focus primarily on transmission planning and modeling of BWL’s 138kV transmission system and NERC compliance related tasks. Modeling will include performing steady state load flow studies and contingency analysis in order to identify system improvement projects and evaluate interconnection applications for transmission level load and generation from internal and external customers. The position will be responsible for becoming a co-SME on several NERC FAC, MOD, and TPL standards and work both collaboratively and independently on maintaining compliance for those standards and demonstrating compliance in periodic audits.

Develops broad knowledge and skills in a specific practice area; Works on small projects or portions of larger projects; Performs moderate design/planning/analysis tasks
Evaluates, selects, and applies standard techniques, procedures, and criteria to perform a task or sequence of tasks for conventional design/planning/analysis projects with few complex features.
Collaboratively uses judgement to determine adaptations in methods for nonroutine aspects of assignments
Prepares portions of, or entire, technical documents. Edits technical documents such as plans, applications, reports, specifications, etc. Performs research and investigations
Assigns tasks to and coordinates work with entry-level engineers, technicians, or administrative staff
Assists in determining schedules and budget requirements
Is self-aware of own emotions and socially aware of others’ feelings and emotions and their impact on performance. Displays self-control and adaptability when working with others to achieve results.
Achievement oriented, feeling a sense of urgency to reach goals on time, if not before.

Required: Job Specifications:

Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Relevant electric transmission or distribution experience; or equivalent related experience. (Typically, four or more years - View specific requirements based on level below)
Knowledge of applicable codes and standards
Ability to effectively communicate in writing and orally
Proficient knowledge of Office 365 applications
Predictable and reliable work schedule
Comply with all BWL policies and work rules
Ability to respond to emergent or unexpected events within the BWL service territory
Ability to effectively work in remote and open-office environments
Michigan driver's license with an acceptable driving record


Preferred:

Electric Power related coursework
Statics and/or Dynamics coursework
Structural related coursework
Fundamentals of Engineer (FE)
Professional Engineering License (PE)

Additional Requirements Based On Level: Engineer III Starting Salary Range: $91,746. - $111,930. Required:

Engineer IV Starting Salary Range: $101,876. - $125,358. Job Specifications:

Mastery of all principal duties and responsibilities thru Engineer III
Applies broad knowledge of principles and practices in specific practice area.
Independently evaluates, selects, and adapts standard techniques, procedures, and criteria.
Designs a complete project, system, component, or process or creates complete plans, studies, or analysis; Works on multiple projects/tasks of moderate size or portions of major projects; Prepares and edits complete technical documents; Designs and conducts experiments, and analyzes and interprets data; Identifies and formulates solutions to problems
Assigns tasks to and directs engineers, technicians, and administrative staff
Plans and coordinates detailed aspects of the engineering work; Prepares scopes, budgets, and schedules for assignments
Assists with proposals to provide professional services or obtain funding for engineering projects or programs.
Works cooperatively with others to accomplish team goals and organizational objectives
Assigns work to others in order to maximize time for strategic thinking and actions. Provides clear guidelines, monitors, redirects and sets limits as needed. Provides challenging assignments, shares authority, and provides resources and support.

Engineer V Starting Salary Range: $113,246. - $140,425

Job Specifications

Independently applies extensive and diversified knowledge of principles and practices in broad areas of assignments and related fields
Uses advanced techniques in the modification or extension of theories and practices of sciences and disciplines to complete assignments
Works on major project/tasks or several projects/tasks of moderate scope with complex features; Reviews complete technical documents for conformity and quality assurance; Coordinates staff necessary to complete assignments
Develops new techniques and/or improved processes, materials, or products.
Assists upper-level management and staff as a technical specialist or advisor; Prepares proposals to provide professional services or obtain funding for engineering projects or programs
Reviews and approves scopes, budgets, and schedules for assignments
Maintaining a position when you know you are right, expressing views without fear or for approval and without engaging in unnecessary aggression.

Must be able to remain in a stationary position for much of the working day. The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office environment including the use of stairs. May need to lift and carry up to 30 pounds and/or position the body to reach items on the floor/below knee level or reach overhead. The person in this position needs to occasionally move about in industrial environments, and uneven terrain. May be required to recognize small numbers, letters, symbols, colors on prints, and/or operate field instruments/equipment.

Works in temperature-controlled office environment, with occasional work in outdoor weather conditions, and in industrial environments.
