Electrical Engineer - Industrial Power and Controls
Jupiter Volta Inc. is looking for a dynamic, ambitious, and hands-on Electrical Engineer to design, develop, and deploy high-performance power and control systems for a novel plasma processing technology, with exciting new applications ranging from making fertilizer to generating fusion energy.
As a member of our small but talented team of engineers and scientists, you will contribute to different areas of expertise as project needs dictate and have the opportunity to enlarge your skillset to meet those needs. The successful candidate will be a self-starter with a pragmatic approach, capable of working independently and incrementally towards ambitious goals via the application of foundational engineering principles. Our ideal candidate seeks a new mission-driven challenge and will thrive in our team culture of innovation, excellence, and passion for changing the world.
- Design, build, test, and troubleshoot industrial control systems and power electronics in compliance with NFPA 79 and NFPA 70 (NEC).
- Define specifications and manage the manufacturing and assembly of complex control panels with external vendors.
- Perform hands-on modifications to new and existing control panels, including adding components and modifying wiring.
- Wire & cable a variety of components including sensors, motors, actuators, power supplies, and network devices.
- Troubleshoot and fix issues in control systems, instrumentation, and electromechanical components.
- Determine the best equipment solutions taking cost, schedule, and performance into account; modify off-the-shelf and used equipment to solve problems when appropriate.
- Design and install routing and mounting for cables, harnesses, and electrical components.
- Develop safety systems including emergency stop, interlock systems, and EMI shielding.
- Generate and execute testing and validation plans for electrical systems and components.
- Collaborate with a cross-functional team of engineers and scientists to evaluate the performance of prototype systems and integrate electrical solutions.
- Create and maintain detailed electrical schematics and documentation in CAD (Solidworks Electrical and Solidworks preferred).
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, or other engineering education including expertise in the design of electrical power and control systems.
- 2+ years of experience in a dedicated Electrical or Controls Engineering Design role.- Hands-on electrical assembly skills – e.g., wiring, soldering, crimping, and using electrical test equipment.
- Fluency in SolidWorks Electrical or another electrical schematic capture package; experience with 3D CAD is a plus.
- Knowledge of industrial control panel components, connectors, and wiring standards.
- Proven ability to work safely and effectively in a hands-on, R&D lab environment.
- PLC, HMI, or SCADA programming (Ladder Logic, Python, C, Ignition Designer).
- Commissioning of variable frequency drives (VFDs).
- Experience with high-voltage AC/DC or pulse power systems like Marx generators or linear transformer drivers.
- Experience performing short circuit current and arc flash calculations using current standards.
- Experience performing risk assessments and determining required safety Performance Level (PL) for control systems (ISO 13849-1).
- PCB and/or power electronics design and assembly.
- Experience with rapid prototype procurement.
- Experience in scientific device development, semiconductor equipment, or a similar field.
