Starting Salary Range: $94,000.00 - $114,700.00
Position Summary
Responsible for electrical engineering activities related to the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of control, DCS and SCADA systems at BWL electric, water, steam and chilled water production facilities, substations, transmission, distribution, and common facilities.
Essential Functions
- Provides electrical controls engineering services for Operations Technology related projects.
- Works with a project team to ensure total project success.
- Completes assignments within appropriate quality guidelines, budgets, and schedules to achieve overall objectives.
- Communicates with internal and external customers to determine their specific needs and concerns, coordinates activities, addresses complaints, and provides feedback, status, and follow-up to ensure complete customer satisfaction within the framework of BWL policies and procedures.
- Uses engineering studies, field investigations, operation data, maintenance records or testing to determine the cause of existing equipment or system performance problems and makes recommendations for improvements.
- Develops plans, project scopes, conceptual designs, estimates, budgets, and schedules based on customer input, system or equipment design and operating/performance criteria, plant operations, maintenance issues, system or equipment protection and reliability issues and outage requirements.
- Completes system designs to meet project scope requirements, applying knowledge of engineering principles, computations, and experience and in compliance with standards, laws, codes, and regulations.
- Develops detailed designs and critical designs calculations, material, equipment, and construction specifications, bid documents, construction drawings, system start-up and operating procedures.
- Review KPI data to improve plant performance.
- Develops and review standards based on sound engineering principles and future industry trends.
- Attends training, conferences, and seminars to stay abreast of upcoming technology advances.
- Typical projects involve production plant DCS and ancillary control system enhancements and upgrades.
- Acts as a liaison to other BWL departments.
- Stays in compliance with BWL purchasing policies and procedures; solicits, evaluates, and recommends bid awards. Coordinates and manages overall project, contractors, and others to ensure conformance with safety requirements, design specifications, construction documents, equipment manufacturer installation and operation criteria, system or plant requirements, clearance procedures, outages, etc.
- Ensures that project documents are properly developed, monitored, filed, and maintained.
- Identifies project needs for administrative approvals, legal reviews, permits, easements, licenses, etc. and ensures they are timely and properly obtained and complied with.
- Assists in the development of procedures, process improvements and revisions to standards.
- Keeps abreast of industry laws, codes, standards, and regulations.
- Acts as an SME and process owner in support of CIP compliance activities.
- Maintains a complete understanding of present NERC CIP standard requirements.
- Follows and enforces the BWL Safety Manual and wears personal protective equipment as required.
- Attends training for safety awareness or skills improvement as required by supervisor, BWL or governmental agency such as MIOSHA. Perform other duties as directed.
- Participation in the continuous improvement of the Asset Management System and Work Management processes.
- Expected to comply with all BWL policies and work rules.
- Predictable and reliable attendance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Must have a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, other related scientific field from an accredited college or university.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience.
- Must have valid MI driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- BSEE with Computer Science, Controls or Power Systems focus preferred.
- Experience in utilities, specifically, electric production, electric transmission, distribution, and substations preferred.
- PE license preferred.

May need to lift and carry up to 30 pounds and/or position the body to reach items on the floor/below knee level or reach overhead. The person in this position needs to occasionally move about in industrial environments, and uneven terrain. May be required to recognize small numbers, letters, symbols, colors on prints, and/or operate field instruments/equipment.
Works in temperature-controlled office environment, with occasional work in outdoor weather conditions, and in industrial environments.
