Solar Liberty is seeking an experienced and driven Electrical Engineer specializing in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to join our engineering team. This position will focus on the design, integration, and implementation of battery storage projects across a variety of scales. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in power systems engineering, energy storage technologies, and electrical design for renewable energy systems.
Key Responsibilities
•Design and engineer battery energy storage systems (BESS) including DC and AC configurations, protection schemes, and control integration
•Develop single-line diagrams, wiring schematics, grounding plans, and equipment layouts
•Perform system modeling, load flow, short circuit, arc flash, and protection coordination studies
•Select and specify batteries, inverters, PCS, switchgear, and associated electrical equipment
•Evaluate integration of BESS with solar PV systems, generators, or grid-connected systems
•Prepare and review electrical engineering deliverables for permitting, procurement, and construction
•Support utility interconnection applications and ensure designs meet applicable codes and standards (NEC, IEEE, UL, NFPA, etc.)
•Coordinate with cross-functional teams including project management, construction, field technicians, and third-party consultants
•Assist with commissioning and performance testing of BESS projects
•Stay current on emerging technologies and best practices in energy storage and power electronics
Qualifications
•Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field (Master’s preferred)
•4+ years of experience in electrical design, with 2+ years focused on battery storage systems
•Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, or similar CAD software
•Experience with power system analysis tools such as ETAP, SKM, or PSCAD
•Deep understanding of lithium-ion and other battery chemistries, inverter technologies, and energy management systems
•Knowledge of interconnection processes and utility standards for energy storage systems
•Familiarity with SCADA, PLCs, and communication protocols (Modbus, DNP3, etc.)
•Strong problem-solving and project coordination skills
•Excellent written and verbal communication
Preferred Qualifications
•Professional Engineer (PE) license or actively working toward licensure
•Experience with utility-scale or microgrid applications
•Familiarity with energy storage incentive programs and compliance requirements
