We are seeking a talented and motivated Electrical Engineer to join our team. The successful candidate for this position will be an experienced Electrical Engineer specializing in Battery Management Systems (BMS) design, programing, and testing. The candidate will develop and test electronic circuits and systems for battery packs that monitor battery health and performance, ensuring safe and optimal battery operation by managing voltage, current, temperature, and other critical parameters across individual cells. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in electrical engineering principles, hands-on experience with BMS hardware, and a passion for ensuring the safety, performance, and reliability of battery systems. They will collaborate with other engineers to integrate the BMS into the overall systems across various applications such as starting batteries (High Power), Traction Batteries (High Energy) and energy storage systems such as APU’s.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
BMS Hardware Design & Development:
•Design, simulate, and develop analog and digital circuits for BMS functions, including voltage/current/temperature sensing, cell balancing, protection circuits, and communication interfaces (e.g., CAN, SPI, I2C).
•Perform component selection, schematic capture, and support PCB layout for BMS boards.
•Analyze circuit tolerance, power consumption, and signal integrity.
•Contribute to the definition of BMS hardware architecture and requirements based on system-level needs.
BMS Testing & Validation:
•Develop comprehensive test plans and procedures for BMS hardware validation at the component, board, and system levels.
•Design and build test fixtures and harnesses for automated and manual testing.
•Execute functional, performance, environmental, and safety tests on BMS prototypes and production units.
•Utilize standard lab equipment (oscilloscopes, DMMs, power supplies, logic analyzers) and specialized battery test systems (cyclers, simulators).
•Analyze test data, identify failures, troubleshoot issues down to the component level, and propose design improvements.
System Integration & Support:
•Firmware integration BMS hardware with control algorithms.
•Work with mechanical engineers on packaging and thermal management considerations.
•Support and testing and design of battery packs including sizing of busbars, solder/welding and material selection.
•Assist manufacturing teams with production testing and troubleshooting.
Documentation & Compliance:
•Create and maintain detailed design documentation, including schematics, BOMs, test plans, test reports, and validation results.
•Ensure BMS designs comply with relevant industry standards (e.g., ISO 26262 for automotive, UL standards, IEC standards).
•Participate in design reviews and failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA)
Education:
•BS in Electrical Engineering
Experience and/or Training:
•5+ years of professional experience in electrical hardware design, development, and testing.
•Demonstrated experience specifically with Battery Management Systems (BMS) hardware design and/or testing
•Proficiency in schematic capture and PCB layout software (e.g., Altium Designer, OrCAD, KiCad).
•Hands-on experience with laboratory test equipment for circuit bring-up, testing, and troubleshooting.
•Solid understanding of analog and digital circuit fundamentals.
•Familiarity with lithium-ion battery chemistries and characteristics.
•Battery pack design including sizing of busbars, solder/welding connections and material selection
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
•Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present information (both written and verbal) clearly and concisely at all levels of the organization.
•Critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills balanced with vision, creativity, and resourcefulness.
•Excellent time management, project management and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities within demanding timeframes and effectively shift individual or team workloads to adapt to changing priorities while maintaining consistency and accuracy of work.
•Proven success in influencing, driving change, and aligning teams beyond reporting structure while building strong, collaborative partnerships.
•Team player that is reliable, flexible, and works in a fast pace, high-growth environment.
•5-10+ Years of experience in BMS design and testing
•Experience with high-voltage battery systems.
•Experience with Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing for BMS.
•Familiarity with functional safety standards (e.g., ISO 26262).
•Knowledge of communication protocols commonly used with BMS (CAN, LIN, SPI, I2C).
•Experience with simulation tools (e.g., SPICE, MATLAB/Simulink).
•Understanding of embedded C programming for microcontrollers used in BMS.
•Experience in industries such as automotive, energy storage, aerospace, or consumer electronics.
