Job Summary:
The Entry-Level trainee position is mentored under the close guidance of Electric Distribution Designers to learn practices and processes related to the planning, cost estimating, design, construction and construction coordination for electric distribution facilities/systems. The entry level Distribution Design Technician will participate in activities related to applying established engineering standards and practices in the following areas: planning distribution systems; determining cable and equipment sizes in accordance with customer system loads; system design alternatives and the associated costs; project timing and coordination; procurement of materials and field inspection; troubleshooting and maintenance services. Entry-Level is intended for the first year of employment.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
•Provide technical support to distribution engineering and field operations for the planning extensions, upgrading and maintenance of the distribution system;
•Prepare cost estimates and work instructions including drawings, material lists and related information necessary to convey design and construction intent;
•Meets with external customers (builders, developers and governmental agencies) concerning service requirements and design options;
•Review any customer provided site development plans, electrical one-lines and panel schedules to calculate load and transformer requirements and design;
•Perform survey and layout work in the field;
•Interpret property line boundary, topographic surveys, as-built surveys, construction staking, ROW staking and collection of geospatial points;
•Research and collect property deed information at record facilities for the evaluation of existing or proposed easements, establish ownership information and definition of property boundaries;
•Initiate designs for new construction, conversion or improvement of both overhead and underground distribution facilities;
•Perform distribution line design calculations for structure loading, guying, geometric angle calculations, pole/flicker calculations, conductor sag interpretation, unitized framing design, construction practices and construction safety guidelines using industry tools and methods;
•Gather all information and interpret the processes for permit acquisition involving City, County, State and Federal applications;
•Inspect work performed by associated crews to ensure construction meets design requirements, association specifications and NESC/NEC requirements;
•May also entail field inspection duties including but not limited to patrolling distribution lines to assess current state, future needs, or storm restoration support;
•Provide scheduled or requested status updates to supervisors, customers or other relevant parties;
•Must document activities in accordance to established documentation and document control practices.
Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):
•High Scholl Diploma or the equivalent is required;
•Associates degree in Electrical Technology or Engineering Technology (or similar discipline) or six months’ work experience that directly relates to the responsibilities above (helper or intern experience acceptable) required;
•Exposure or experience (class and on the job experience may combine) in Graphic Tool design or electronic design software relating to the position or industry (e.g. GDT, Maximo, Pole-Foreman) preferred;
•The ideal candidate will have course work or on the job exposure to areas of distribution design such as AC Voltage Generation, Impedance and Voltage Drop, Three Phase Power Systems, System Layout, Overhead Lines, Underground Distribution Systems, Substations, Distributed Generation, Substation Transformers, Distribution Transformers, Fault Interrupting Devices, Fundamentals of Protection and Overcurrent Protection;
•Must demonstrate the ability to understand codes and practices related to the position;
•Must demonstrate understanding and applying basic mathematics;
•Candidate must have the ability to communicate effectively and professionally with a diverse audience (customers, field workers and management).
Working Conditions:
Work is primarily conducted at Project Construction Sites within Utility Company service area (may require occasional travel to other services areas). This might include electric Substations, Transmission and Distribution lines.
Interaction with other team members, as well as supervisors and client personnel.
Must be able to wear safety equipment as required by the safety department for personal protection.
May be at more than one job site in a day and must be able to tolerate climate changes.
