Job Description:
The Director/Vice President of Estimating is responsible for overseeing the preparation of accurate and detailed cost estimates for a wide range of civil infrastructure projects, including roads, bridges, highways, and water treatment facilities. This leadership role involves analyzing project plans, specifications, and related documentation to evaluate material, labor, equipment, and subcontractor costs while ensuring consistency, quality, and alignment with project goals and company objectives.
The Director/VP works closely with executive leadership, project managers, engineers, and key external partners to deliver competitive, comprehensive estimates that support strategic growth and operational success. This role also provides guidance to the estimating team, implements best practices, and plays a critical part in shaping bid strategies and preconstruction efforts.
Responsibilities:
•Lead and manage the estimating department, ensuring consistent and high-quality project estimates across all civil disciplines.
•Review and approve major project estimates, ensuring accuracy, competitiveness, and alignment with company risk and profitability standards.
•Analyze plans, specifications, and scope documents to assess overall project feasibility and develop cost strategies.
•Collaborate with internal stakeholders—including operations, business development, and finance—to align estimates with execution capabilities and financial goals.
•Build and maintain relationships with subcontractors, vendors, and clients to support cost accuracy and bid competitiveness.
•Identify and mitigate potential risks during the estimating phase and contribute to value engineering discussions.
•Mentor and develop estimating staff, fostering a culture of accountability, precision, and continuous improvement.
•Standardize estimating procedures, tools, and reporting methods to improve efficiency and performance across all bids.
Qualifications:
•Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, construction management, or related field (Master’s preferred).
•10+ years of progressive experience in civil construction estimating, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
•Extensive knowledge of civil infrastructure projects, including DOT, municipal, and private sector work.
•Proficient in estimating software (e.g., HCSS Heavy Bid, Bluebeam, Plan Swift, or equivalent).
•Strong understanding of industry pricing trends, labor productivity, subcontracting strategies, and unit cost development.
•Proven leadership and team management skills with the ability to inspire and influence cross-functional teams.
•Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
•Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
