About the role:

Reporting to the Vice President, Sustainable Development, the Director, Community and Indigenous Affairs is responsible for leading the development and delivery of programs and initiatives to achieve EVR’s social responsibility goals including those for both Indigenous and non-indigenous communities. This position is based in Sparwood with frequent travel to sites and within local communities and will lead and implement EVR’s Indigenous engagement strategy. All activities will be aligned with EVR’s Health and Safety, Environment, Human Rights Policies, and our commitments to external initiatives such as Towards Sustainable Mining, ICMM Principles and Performance Expectations, the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, and the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

In this role you will:

- Participate in and adhere to health and safety programs and policies

- Provide leadership and management for the development and implementation of EVR’s policies, objectives and strategy related to community (social responsibility) and Indigenous affairs across the mining lifecycle

- Provide technical expertise to senior management, other corporate functions, operations, projects and exploration, in areas of community and Indigenous affairs including, but not limited to community and Indigenous risk identification and management, community engagement, social impacts, social due diligence, sustainable benefits, human and Indigenous rights and associated internal and external reporting

- Directs the development of corporate policies and practices related to Indigenous affairs and develops and manages strategies, internal procedures and plans of engagement with Indigenous Peoples across the life of asset

- Identify and analyze emerging and current issues and trends related to community and Indigenous affairs matters that may impact EVR, including for example, developments associated with global Human Rights and Free Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) for Indigenous peoples

- Contribute to the ongoing successful implementation of the company’s Sustainability Strategy as the focus area lead for Communities, including Indigenous aspects. Provide recommendations, strategic insight and recognize opportunities associated with direct delivery of programs to meet Sustainability objectives, and support critical functional groups (including Human Resources, Technology and Innovation) in development of associated strategies

- Build internal capacity and lead training initiatives globally that support EVR’s internal and external commitments to community and Indigenous affairs, community engagement and sustainability. This includes the development of resources such as tools and guidance (including the SMART toolkit and Indigenous agreement policies), providing advisory services and training, and leading the company’s community and Indigenous affairs practitioner groups

- Represent EVR’s corporate interests related to community and Indigenous affairs matters internally on EVR projects and initiatives and provide technical advice and oversight on social impact assessments and associated tasks such as resettlement, Indigenous and human rights assessments and social management planning

- Develop and oversee a company-wide social management system and associated technologies, such as Borealis

- Oversee EVR’s Community Investment program including processes and tools used to receive, assess, and track community investment decisions and outcomes

- Enhance and manage community and Indigenous affairs metrics and reporting quarterly to senior management and annually through EVR’s sustainability reporting mechanisms

- Build, lead and develop the corporate community and Indigenous affairs team and provide technical mentorship and leadership to EVR’s global community and Indigenous affairs staff at sites and with corporate functional groups

- Provide leadership for Community and Indigenous Relations on annual and multi-year strategic planning and business planning processes

- Lead the negotiation and implementation of project specific and EVR wide agreements relating to the acknowledgement of Indigenous peoples and their Rights. Of particular relevance is the implementation and upholding of the Impact Management and Benefit Agreement held with Ktunaxa Nation


Requirements:

- 10 years of relevant professional work experience related to social responsibility, Indigenous affairs, sustainability and community engagement/development

- Degree in social sciences, sustainability, social policy or other related fields

- Proven technical knowledge/experience in social and participative research methods, e.g. community and Indigenous data collection, social impact assessment, community development programming and social reporting, with demonstrated application in BC and Canadian regulatory environments

- Demonstrated success working with different communities of interest and designing, managing and evaluating associated community strategies and programs aligned with provincial and federal permitting processes

- Experience in cross-functional program development, delivery, administration and evaluation

- Experience in the extractives sector, with a strong understanding of Canadian mining regulations, BC Environmental Assessment Act, and federal Impact Assessment Act

- Experience in working with Indigenous peoples

- Experience of monitoring and evaluating programs and initiatives

- Knowledge and experience of international principles and best practice related to communities and social responsibility eg. International Council of Mining and Metals (ICMM), UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, Sustainable Development Goals (MDGs), Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and International Finance Corporation Performance Standards (IFC PS), with the ability to integrate these within Canadian regulatory contexts

- Integrity, respect and solutions focused with a commitment to inclusive, participatory and sustainable community development

- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License or equivalent
