We are currently hiring 2 Production Assistants to join the team at our Goderich Underground Salt Mine in Goderich, Ontario. This is an on-site 6-month contract position.
Compass Minerals’ Goderich Salt Mine, located 1,800 feet under Lake Huron, is the largest underground salt mine in the world. The mine is as deep as the CN Tower in Toronto is tall. The rock salt produced at the mine is used to keep citizens in North America safe as they travel through winter snow and ice. The salt is shipped to hundreds of communities around the Great Lakes and along the St. Lawrence Seaway. Some of the salt is trucked to the Compass Minerals plant less than 4 kilometers away, to be packaged for distribution and sale at retailers in North America. The salt is also sold in bulk to manufacturers that make plastics, detergents, disinfectants and other important products.
Goderich is named Canada’s Prettiest Town and is best known for its stunning sunsets. Goderich is a lakeside community of 8,000 people located approximately 1.5 hours from London and Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario.
HOW WILL YOU CONTRIBUTE TO THE TEAM?
The Underground Mining Production Assistant plays a vital role in supporting mining operations by ensuring the smooth and efficient running of underground production activities including administrative activities. This position works closely with the Shift Supervisor to support operational needs, maintain high safety standards, and ensure all mining processes are carried out effectively. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, safety-conscious, and capable of working in a fast-paced underground mining environment.
- Support Mining Operations: Work under the direct supervision of the Shift Supervisor, receiving clear instructions and assisting in achieving production objectives and goals.
- Cross-Shift Work Area Inspection: Inspect and ensure all post-shift activities are completed to the required standards and expectations.
- Deficiency Reporting: Identify and document any deficiencies or safety concerns that may arise during daily operations for root cause analysis and improvement initiatives.
- Data Entry and Record Keeping: Accurately enter and maintain data related to production activities, safety protocols, and inventory into various systems. Ensure all records are up to date and accessible.
- Production Equipment Distribution: Distribute and maintain records for production equipment remotes, batteries, and other tools, ensuring that these are efficiently allocated between crews.
- Time Study Activities: Conduct in-field time study activities, tracking production progress and assisting in the development of efficiency improvement strategies.
- Reporting & Documentation: Assist with providing data for the daily shift reports, including downplay delays, in production metrics, equipment status, to the Shift Supervisor.
- Health & Safety Compliance: Adhere to all health, safety, and environmental regulations, ensuring compliance with company policies and industry best practices.
- Team Support: Collaborate with the mining team and other departments to assist in improving processes and maintaining operational continuity.
- Ad-hoc Duties: Perform other related duties as required, including assisting with preparing reports, and supporting the team in special projects or initiatives.

WHAT SHOULD YOU BRING TO THE ROLE?
- High school diploma or equivalent. Additional technical certifications or mining-related education is a plus.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn new data entry systems quickly.
- Ability to conduct field observations and time study analysis.
- Ability to follow strict safety protocols and work in a physically demanding, hazardous environment.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to take direction and prioritize tasks.
- Previous experience in an underground mining environment or have the ability to work in an underground environment
- Understanding of mining equipment and operations
- Experience working with mining equipment and machinery.
- Knowledge of production reporting software and other operational management systems.
- Monday-Friday, 8-hour shifts including days and afternoons.
- This position is expected to work underground.
