Chief Marine Pilot
Summary of Position
The Chief Marine Pilot is a leadership role responsible for overseeing and managing all piloting operations within the harbor. This includes supervising a team of pilots, coordinating scheduling to ensure continuous coverage, and making critical decisions to ensure the safe and efficient movement of vessels. The Chief Marine Pilot directs vessel maneuvering, manages tug assignments, and ensures compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory standards. This role involves providing training and performance evaluations for pilots, handling staffing decisions, and leading marine projects. In addition to leadership and administrative responsibilities, the Chief Marine Pilot will be expected to stand regular pilotage shifts and actively participate in vessel movements as required. The Chief Marine Pilot plays a key role in maintaining smooth harbor operations and ensuring the safety of vessels and personnel. This position reports to the Marine Manager.
Qualifications
Education
Required:
•Bachelor’s degree from an accredited Maritime Academy.
•US Coast Guard First Class Pilot License for Limetree Bay, Krause Lagoon & Connecting Channels
•US Coast Guard Masters License – 1600 tons.
•Standards of Training and Watchkeeping (STCW) certification.
•Radar Observer Unlimited certification.
Preferred:
•Master of Business Administration
•Advanced Ship Handling & Bridge Resource Management (BRM) certification is preferred.
Experience
•Minimum of fifteen (15) years of Marine Operations Management experience.
•Experience with Single Point Mooring Operations preferred.
•Sea-going experience is desirable.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
•Specialized local knowledge of harbors and waterways via Limetree Bay, Port ALUCROIX, Container Port.
•Possess the required knowledge, skills, and abilities of a Harbor Pilot.
•Knowledge of operating characteristics of various size and powered vessels and assist tugs.
•Able to fill in for Marine Manager when necessary.
•Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Power Point.
•Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
•Results driven with strong planning and organization skills.
•Demonstrated knowledge of Marine equipment maintenance, ISM standards, vessel operations, emergency response equipment, safety and regulatory compliance procedures.
•Highly motivated self-starter who takes initiative with minimum supervision.
•Proven ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion in making recommendations.
•Knowledge and understanding of current facility’s HSE regulations and Marine procedures and processes preferred.
•Demonstrated ability to empower the workforce and develop alignment with numerous department groups.
•Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization.
•Demonstrated ability to influence others.
Applicable Additional Requirements
•Ability and willingness to work extended hours, nights, rotating shifts, and holidays when required
•Ability to obtain, or currently possess, a valid Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC)
Physical Requirements
•Ability to climb stairs and pilot ladders up to 60 feet and onboard vessels.
•Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds, climb tanks, push and pull, reach overhead, operate hand tools, stoop and squat, wear breathing apparatus, enter confined spaces and utilize all necessary personal protective equipment.
•Ability to sit, walk, and stand for extended period
•Ability to work outdoors and on a vessel in difficult conditions, including adverse weather conditions
Location of Position is St. Croix, USVI
