Overview:
PURPOSE STATEMENT:
Operates and maintains the Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG) Plant Laboratory facility and material analysis equipment to
provide accurate data and recommendations supporting SNG Plant Operations. Performs research, analysis, and
experimentation on liquid, solid and gaseous materials, substances, and compounds for quality control, and quantitative
and qualitative analysis. Interprets analysis results, provides reports and recommendations to ensure optimal plant
production and reliability. Responsible for laboratory safety and analysis equipment operation, reliability, and
maintenance.
Responsibilities:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Performs both routine and ad hoc analyses of organic and inorganic compounds to determine chemical and physical
properties, utilizing such techniques as gas chromatography, spectroscopy and spectrophotometry, bomb calorimetry, and qualitative analysis. This includes daily gas chromatography of naphtha, SNG, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide, carbonate solution, and boiler feedwater.
•Evaluates and interprets test results and makes recommendations to ensure process reliability and help maximize production efficiencies.
•Maintains, implements, trains upon, and enforces laboratory written procedures.
•Responsible for laboratory equipment reliability and accuracy. Calibrates laboratory equipment and instruments.
•Prepares and standardizes reagents and solutions.
•Maintains and requisitions laboratory equipment and supplies.
•Monitors and makes recommendations to ensure optimal water quality. Oversees maintenance and troubleshooting
of the water Demineralizer System. Tests water for pH, silica, conductivity, alkalinity, additives, residuals, etc.
•Monitors product gases and Benfield process streams and makes recommendations to ensure the Benfield System
function is within optimal parameters. Runs gas chromatography on SNG, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide. Analyzes carbonate solution using spectrometry.
•Performs regular testing of odorant levels in utility gas to ensure they meet compliance and safety standards. Provides reports to stakeholders and makes recommendations to SNG Plant Operations.
•Monitors process streams for impurities, e.g. sulfur using a sulfur analyzer. Tracks impurity levels and works with
Operations to plan the replacement of catalyst and other media.
•Responsible for the daily automated gas chromatograph analysis of naphtha feeds, naphtha fuel, liquified petroleum gas (LPG), fuel gas, SNG, Hydrogen, CO2, etc.
•Helps to ensure the accurate and consistent measurement of energy content in gas products sold. Complies with
Public Utilities Commission rules spelled out in General Order 9 and Tariff for Utility Gas Service.
•Reports deviations and anomalies, assisting Operations in investigations to determine root causes and develop
corrective actions. Prepares technical reports summarizing and detailing these findings.
•Enters data into the SNG Plant’s Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS). Initiates work orders and updates entries as applicable.
•Manages projects and contractor work associated with lab systems, the Demineralizer System, chemical injection,
and catalysts. Prepares documents for the SNG Plant’s Management of Change (MOC) process.
•Assists SNG Plant Operations during plan shutdowns, start-ups, and turnarounds.
•Researches technical references and works with technical subject matter experts to gather relevant information to
help troubleshoot process irregularities and optimize plant performance. Provides training as necessary.
OTHER FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Acts as a backup to the Office Coordinator by performing some routine duties in their absence such as generating
daily plant performance reports, processing receipts and allocations for FTZ filings, and checking the SNG btu for
utility billing.
•Assists in the training and certification of SNG Plant Operators.
•Complies with all safety rules and cooperates in the fullest in the promotion of safety and safe work habits, to include the reporting of any unsafe conditions or acts. Maintains all EH&S training on a current basis.
•Helps to ensures SNG Plant compliance with Federal, State, and local regulations.
•Complies with and helps to enforce all applicable corporate and Hawaii Gas policies and procedures.
•Keeps abreast of changes in technology and developments applicable to the industry and these job duties, and works with SNG Plant personnel to implement viable changes.
