This is a CASUAL position located in Inuvik, NT (no relocation/accommodations provided)
Under the general supervision and direction of the Generation Support Manager, the casual Plant Operator is responsible for the day-to-day routine maintenance of the Inuvik Plant engines, and the associated auxiliary equipment. Also responsible for maintenance and upkeep of Plant cleanliness, yard organization, and fence repairs.
- Always work safely, adhere to all aspects of the NTPC Health & Safety and Environmental programs, comply with all rules & regulations, and continually practice health & safety while performing any duties.
- Ensure the safety of other employees, contractors and the general public in the workplace by:
- Reporting any failure to adhere to safety practices or rules
- Providing detailed orientations and identification of hazards to all visitors
- Removing hazards or make the workplace safe when leaving a work area
- Participate in the continuous improvement of the Health & Safety program, Environment program as well as NTPC’s safety culture.
- Participates in team meetings in accordance with the principles of team management to determine generation program objectives, to provide input to group financial and program planning, and to assess and coordinate unit workload and priorities.
- Provides support to regional, head office or contract staff in the completion of area projects with regards to scheduling, monitoring and hands-on assistance.
- Develops and maintains good working relationships with community and local business representatives, informs the Operations Manager, Generation Support Beaufort Delta of local problems, issues, or initiatives that may concern the corporation, participates with regional and head office management and staff in meetings with community representatives, and participates in corporate sponsored events.
- Maintain buildings as to a safe, clean manner including keeping entrances / exits clear of snow and debris, combustible materials stored in proper locations, testing of emergency lighting and exit signs and get serviced as needed. Ensure tools and equipment are properly inventoried, maintained and stored. Floors swept and washed.
- Ensures that the power plant, auxiliary buildings, tank farm and compound are secure and that the regional office is immediately notified of all hazardous, or potentially hazardous, conditions or environmental issues.
- Provides training to and receives training from co-workers and performs other duties related to Thermal Division operations as determined by the Manager, Generation Beaufort Delta.
- Other duties as required.
- High School diploma (or equivalent) plus related mechanical or electrical experience or plant operator training, OR a minimum of Grade 10 education with at least three (3) year's relevant mechanical or electrical experience. Equivalencies may be considered.
- A valid full Class 5 NWT driver’s license is required.
- A course in Power Engineering, Building Maintenance or one with an electrical / mechanical orientation would be an asset.
- Related journeyperson certification would be an asset.
- Excellent knowledge of safety regulations and procedures.
- Basic Computer Skills are required.
- Ability to work in a team environment with minimum direct supervision in a location remote from the regional office.
- Good oral and written communication skills to maintain effective, open, and reliable communications with team members, customers, and community representatives.
- Administrative, supervisory, and organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and assignments, direct the work of staff, and to provide documentation, reports, and recommendations to the regional office.
- Valid First Aid and CPR certification would be an asset. (Must be willing to travel for Mandatory training)
- Steel-toed boots are required.
This casual position pays $42.96 per hour plus 10% vacation pay. This position is located in Inuvik, NT. No housing or relocation assistance provided.
