FLSA Status: Full Time / Salary

Pay Range: $140,000 to $150,000 Annually (dependent on experience/qualifications). Salary is based on Long Beach, CA location, and will be adjusted for candidates in other states if required.

Job Purpose: Under general direction of the Business Development Lead, the BD Process Engineer is responsible for site evaluation, executing technical due diligence work, troubleshooting and operations support, and implementing efficient process control systems necessary for the operation of equipment and machinery. The BD Process Engineer collaborates closely with clients, internal teams, and external vendors to ensure the execution from inception to completion.


Duties & Responsibilities:

- Act as the primary subject matter expert for all RNG process engineering scopes across the organization

- Review, approve, and redline process deliverables, including PFDs, P&IDs, mass/energy balances, datasheets, control narratives, and process calculations

- Ensure consistency, accuracy, and compliance with internal design standards, applicable codes (ASME, NFPA, etc.), and industry best practices

- Participate in and lead commissioning and startup efforts for new or modified RNG facilities

- Provide on-site troubleshooting and resolution of complex process issues related to flow, separation, compression, instrumentation, or control logic

- Coordinate with and work with project engineers, controls engineers, and O&M teams to ensure a successful and safe transition to steady-state operations

- Support operating assets by performing data reviews and identifying opportunities for optimization or debottlenecking

- Lead or contribute to root cause investigation following process upsets or operational challenges, and recommend corrective actions

- Provide structured technical training for other engineers and project team members

- Review and critique engineering work, provide feedback, and support skill development of internal engineering staff

- Contribute to the creation and improvement of engineering standards, templates, and procedures for processing engineering

- Support R&D and pilot-scale efforts when transitioning to commercial-scale applications with guidance on process configuration and operability

- Participate in Process Hazard Analyses (HAZOPs), Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSR), and operability assessments

- Identify and mitigate process risks through engineered safety solutions and operating procedures

- Interface with other discipline leads (mechanical, electrical, civil, controls) to ensure process requirements are fully captured and reflected in all design documents

- Attend and contribute to interdisciplinary design reviews, model walkthroughs, and constructability reviews

- Prepare and maintain high-quality process documentation, technical memoranda, and commissioning checklists

- Serve as the process engineering technical liaison for internal stakeholders, vendors, and project clients when necessary

- Travel as necessary, with the ability to obtain a Passport to travel outside the United States

- These duties are not meant to be all-inclusive, and other duties may be assigned


Skills & Qualifications


Minimum Requirements:

- Bachelor of Science Degree in chemical engineering

- Minimum of 8 years of process engineering experience with direct involvement in RNG/ biogas , or similar industries like oil & gas

- Expertise in RNG Process Design with deep knowledge of renewable natural gas systems, including landfill, anaerobic digestion, LFG/DG treatment, CO₂ separation, N₂ separation, O₂ separation, H₂S removal, VOC/Siloxane removal, compression, and pipeline injection.

- Advanced PFD & P&ID Development, highly proficient in reviewing and redlining Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) with a focus on operability, safety, and maintainability

- Skilled in process modelling using tools such as Aspen Plus, HYSYS, or equivalent; ability to perform material and energy balances, sizing calculations

- Demonstrated experience in field commissioning, start-up support, hands-on troubleshooting of process systems and unit operations

- Ability to create, review, and standardize design criteria, datasheets, calculation templates, and process engineering guidelines

- Strong communication and leadership skills to mentor other engineers, conduct technical training, and lead formal design reviews

- Proven ability to work with mechanical, electrical, civil, and controls teams to deliver coordinated, constructible designs

- Direct experience in RNG/biogas
